This actually happened over the last few days, but the realization hit me about an hour ago and I am currently mortified.

For some context, I love board games. Recently, I’ve been hosting a weekly game night in my garage with a few friends. Because the garage gets a bit stuffy, we leave the side windows cracked open.

Lately, we’ve been playing a lot of poker and high-stakes strategy games. Because we like to take it way too seriously, we bought a massive, heavy-duty set of professional clay poker chips. If you’ve ever handled these, you know they make a very distinct, incredibly loud clack-clack-clack sound when you shuffle them, stack them, or splash the pot.

Here is where the fuck up starts.

To make things more "immersive" and drown out the street noise, I’ve been playing heavy, gritty 90s-style instrumental hip-hop beats through my garage speakers. Lots of deep bass, dramatic horn loops, and classic vinyl scratches.

Apparently, to the outside world, this combination of sounds is highly suspicious.

Last night, we had a particularly intense game. There was a lot of yelling, a ton of rapid-fire chip shuffling, and loud declarations like, "I'm all in," "You're bleeding me dry," "Open a ticket if you want a piece of this," and "There is no way you have the cards to back that up."

Cut to this morning. I’m out in the front yard raking some leaves when my next-door neighbor walks by. He’s an older, usually quiet guy, but he stops, looks around suspiciously, and leans in.

In a low whisper, he says, "Hey man... look, I don't care what people do with their own time, and I'm definitely no snitch. But you gotta keep the volume down on the backroom operation. The music is one thing, but everyone on the block can hear the chips stacking from the sidewalk. Just don't want the cops showing up, you know?"

I froze. My brain scrambled to connect the dots.

He thinks my garage is a smoky, illegal, underground gambling den run by a 90s rap aficionado. He thinks the "tickets" we were talking about were buy-ins.

I stammered and tried to explain that we were literally just playing board games, but the look he gave me was pure, "Sure buddy, your secret is safe with me" with a knowing wink. He totally thinks I'm lying to cover my tracks.

Now I’m sitting here realizing that half my neighborhood probably thinks I'm a low-level Tony Soprano because we like the sound of clay chips and boom-bap instrumentals. I have to face them all at the neighborhood block association meeting next week.

TL;DR: Hosted a game night in my garage with professional clay poker chips and loud 90s hip-hop beats. The windows were open, the neighborhood heard the chip shuffling and aggressive betting talk, and now my neighbor thinks I’m running an illegal underground casino.
