My SO and I left our house early in the morning to drive two hours away to support my brother at a sporting event. Apparently in our rush to get out the door, we left the side door that we never use unlocked. We didn’t realize it was unlocked, just because we use the door so rarely that we never think to check it. This has never been an issue before though, we live in a nice part of town. I know all our neighbors, and I’ve always felt safe going on walks around the block.

We spend the day two hours away supporting my brother, and around 5pm we realize we’re not gonna be home for a while longer. At that point, we ask some of our friends (let’s call them Clark and Bea) if they could drive the few minutes over to let our dogs out for a pee break. They agree, drive over, and then things take a sharp left turn towards Albuquerque. There’s already a car in our driveway. They don’t think much of it until they see a man in the kitchen through the window and realize there’s ALREADY SOMEONE IN THE HOUSE.

My friends, not immediately jumping to conclusions, grab the spare key, let themselves in, and ask the man politely: “hey who the fuck are you?” The guy is not threatening at all, he’s just meandering in the kitchen making himself at home. He’s in his late twenties, blond hair, kind of chubby, only about 5’5”. He introduced himself (first and last name) and tries to explain to Clark that he’s a friend of the previous owners (not impossible but definitely irrelevant), and he’s here to take care of the dogs (patently untrue). Apparently the man has a passing resemblance to my SO, so Bea at first thought he could be related to her in some way, but once he didn’t give that particular excuse it became apparent that he was in fact a house intruder. At this point they tell the guy that he’s gotta go because he’s trespassing, but he acts wishy washy, tries to explain why he should be here, just kind of making excuses to stick around.

Quick aside, Clark is not a small man. I don’t know that I would call the home intruder dwarfed by him, but let’s just say it’s very, very obvious who would win in a fight. So once Clark starts getting a little more direct with his demands to “get the fuck out of my friend’s house now”, the intruder takes the hint and calmly with his hands in the air walks out. Bea had already been sent by Clark to move their car so the intruder could just get the hell out once he got out the door. The intruder gets in his car and peels away.

At this point, it’s around 6:30pm and my SO and I are hanging out in a Scheels with my brother and his fianceé. So imagine my surprise when in the middle of the Scheels shoe section I get a call telling me that there was a random person in my house. Let me tell you, it is an extremely surreal experience having that conversation while the 65yo lady across from me is trying on some new Brooks. We call the police and my SO’s parents, who live close to our house, and everything gets moving pretty quick. My SO and I start the long drive back home almost immediately. The police are there within 10 mins, and they get statements from Clark and Bea, and hang out until the parents arrive. My friends and family don’t feel comfortable going through all of our stuff to make sure nothing was stolen without us there, so the officers tell us to call back when we arrive home and they can get statements from us to see if anything was stolen.

So imagine my surprise when we get home to see an officer already at our front door. Apparently about ten minutes before we got home the intruder CAME BACK. At this point it’s about 9:30pm, and it’s fully nighttime. Everyone heard a knock at the door, and Clark opened it up to see the exact same intruder standing on the other side of the storm door. Clark had just assumed it was an officer coming to give an update, I think he literally says “no fucking way” in pure shock to the guy. The intruder gave some BS excuse about forgettung something on the counter (we confirmed later he hadn’t left a damn thing), and asked to come in once again. Clark turns back towards the house to tell everyone what’s happening, only to see my SO’s father gathering his gun and coming towards the door. Clark turns around and tells the guy “trust me, i’m trying to help you, you gotta leave right now.” The intruder starts to give more excuses, but at this point probably sees the angry man with a gun turn the corner and start coming towards him, and decides that maybe actually he should leave. He turns around and sprints to his car, and hops in. There was a brief scary moment where my SO’s father had to line up a shot because the intruder rolled the car window down and turned his cabin lights on, but no shots were fired, and the intruder peeled off into the night.

The 911 response was within 2-3 mins, but they weren’t quite quick enough to catch the man leaving. But the officer we saw talking at the front door as we pulled in from our long drive was the first on the scene. He stuck around as my SO and I went through all of our belongings, and kept finding that nothing had really been disturbed. Nothing stolen, nothing out of place, nobody hurt: it was like nothing had happened at all. Well, almost nothing, and this might be the stupidest part of all of this. There was a mixing bowl in our fridge with about a week’s worth of chicken salad that we were going to use for lunch for the next couple of days. That bowl was sitting out on the counter with a spoon in it, and there wasn’t a shred of chicken salad left. At all. The bastard didn’t touch a damn thing in my house except for devouring like 9 servings of homemade chicken salad I was really looking forward to.

Good news, is that my friends and family are amazing. Clark and Bea stayed at the house the whole time until we got home, and they stayed even later to help set up some security cameras my SO’s mother had bought on the way to our house. My SO’s father is sleeping on our couch so we’re not alone in the house tonight. And I’ve gotten plenty of calls from friends to ask if there’s anything they can help with. All our valuables are accounted for, our friends and pets are safe and unharmed, and the police were able to positively identify the man because he gave his real first and last name to Clark when he asked who the fuck he was. Things could have been so, so much worse, so if the only thing of value I lost today was my homemade chicken salad, I can live with that.

TL:DR: My SO and I accidentally left our door unlocked in a rush to leave, some random man walked in, stole nothing, hurt nobody, but devoured all of the rest of our chicken salad that was in the fridge.
