This happened about three hours ago and I still feel like an idiot.

So I work in a mid-sized office building, nothing fancy, just cubicles and conference rooms. I brought soup for lunch today because I've been trying to eat better and also because the cafeteria food has been kinda sketchy lately. I grabbed one of those pull-tab cans, the kind where you just yank the metal ring and it opens without a can opener.

I was sitting at my desk around noon, getting ready to heat it up, when I pulled the tab. Except the tab didn't come off cleanly. It sort of half-opened and then the whole thing just exploded. I'm talking soup everywhere. My keyboard, my monitor, my shirt, the carpet, even somehow on the wall behind me. It was tomato basil so it looked like a crime scene.

But here's where it gets worse. The can made this loud metallic POP sound when it blew, and I guess because our office has been doing active shooter drills lately, people freaked out. Someone two rows over yelled IS THAT A GUNSHOT and then like four people hit the floor. My manager came running out of her office looking terrified. Another guy started herding people toward the stairwell.

I just stood there covered in soup trying to explain what happened but everyone was either panicking or staring at me. It took a solid two minutes before people realized it was just me being a disaster with a can. My manager was relieved but also clearly annoyed. Facilities had to come clean the carpet and now there's this awkward tension whenever someone microwaves food near my desk.

I've been getting side-eye all afternoon and someone already made a joke about banning me from bringing canned goods. Pretty sure I'm going to be known as soup guy for the rest of my time here.

TL;DR: Opened a can of soup wrong, it exploded loudly, half the office thought it was a gunshot and panicked, now I'm a legend for all the wrong reasons.
