It's this. In another life, I knew an Air Force guy whose wife had come over from Russia; this wasn't quite in the immediate aftermath of the USSR dissolving -- about 8 years too late for that -- but I'm guessing she must have been desperate to get the fuck out of Dodge if she married this chode for a green card. The guy was both illiterate and colorblind, yet somehow a recruiter got him into a technician job that involved working around and maintaining aircraft wiring.

At any rate, the woman didn't speak very much English, and he would try to boss her around and then get flustered when she would have no idea what the hell he was saying. So he would repeat himself more loudly, still without whatever result he was expecting. Finally, he would repeat himself again while doing a terrible Boris Badenov-esque Russian accent, which usually pissed her off so much that she would leave the room and pretend to do housework just to shut him the hell up.

I sometimes wonder what happened to those kids. I hope she made it out in one piece.

I guess maybe it goes without saying from the "extremely poor village in Thailand" part but there's also the common thing with mail-order brides that their captors have a lot of money compared to anything available to them at home and there's at least a perception of being in a safer environment as well (though obviously the sort of men who do this are usually not that safe to be around, especially if they view you as effectively their slave like this guy does).

Anyway, it's a horrible situation and I'm glad that you're helping her stay sane. Hopefully he falls sick and dies, or maybe takes one of his army buddies to a shooting range and
