This happened this morning and I'm still getting random waves of embarrassment.
My partner and I had a small argument last night. Nothing huge, just the tired, cranky kind of miscommunication that ends with both of us stubbornly digging in. I woke up early, made coffee, and decided to be an adult about it. I typed a long, honest apology on my phone, the kind where you actually name the thing you did, say how you'll try to do better, and ask if you can talk later.
Here is the stupid part: my boss and my partner have the same first name, and my boss's thread is pinned near the top of my messages because of work. I hit send without checking which conversation I was in.
Seconds later my boss replied "Uh..." and then "Are you okay?" I looked at the message and felt my stomach drop. It read like I was apologizing for being distant, not listening, snapping when stressed, and it ended with "I love you and I want to fix this."
I tried to unsend but it was already delivered. I called my boss and blurted out that it was meant for my partner, that I was mortified, and that I promise I was not having a meltdown at work. They were surprisingly kind, but also laughing in that strained professional way where you can tell they are amused but trying not to be.
Now I have to go into the office later and act like a normal human being. Any tips on how to recover from this without making it even weirder? Should I joke about it, apologize again, or pretend nothing happened?
TL;DR: I wrote a sincere "I love you, I want to fix this" apology for my partner and accidentally sent it to my boss who has the same first name. Now I have to face them at work.
