This happened last night and my hands are still shaking a bit while typing this. For context, I have a 2-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. If you know anything about the breed, you know they are basically furry balls of pure energy, but mine is usually the sweetest girl. However, sometimes she gets into these weird moods where she just won’t shut up. Yesterday was a long, brutal day at work, and by 2 AM, I was fast asleep. Suddenly, I wake up to her literally jumping onto my chest. She wasn’t just doing her usual "I want to go out" whine — she let out a terrifying, deep bark right into my face. I pushed her off, told her to go away, and tried to roll over. But she straight up refused to let me sleep. She started scratching at my blankets, biting the edge of my pillow, and making this bizarre, frantic crying sound. At this point, I was furious. I got out of bed ready to lock her in the living room so I could get some damn sleep. The moment my feet hit the floor, I felt completely dizzy. Like, instantly lightheaded and nauseous. I thought maybe I just got up too fast, so I walked out of the bedroom. As I got closer to the kitchen, the dizziness got worse, and my dog started pulling my sweatpants toward the front door. That’s when I heard a faint, rhythmic beeping from the hallway. It was the carbon monoxide detector. My brain finally connected the dots. I ran back, grabbed my wife, woke up the kids, and we literally bolted out of the house in our pajamas. Turns out, there was a severe gas leak from the old furnace in the basement. The fire department said that if we had stayed asleep for another hour or two, we probably wouldn’t have woken up at all. I’ve been feeling like the biggest piece of shit all day for screaming at her to shut up when she was literally trying to keep us alive. Needless to say, she is currently eating a ribeye steak on the couch, and she officially rules this house now. TLDR: Thought my Jack Russell was just having a midnight freakout and yelled at her to let me sleep. Turns out she was trying to wake me up because of a massive carbon monoxide leak. She saved my whole family.
