Reuters: Trump says the US should control the Strait of Hormuz and get paid for it

President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States would probably take over the Strait of Hormuz and should be reimbursed for controlling ​the vital waterway.

I'm not the resident Hexbear oil understander, but I don't think you need to go very deep to understand that there's something wrong going on. Look at this picture:

The SPR is at its lowest levels since the 80's, and keeps falling, although at a lower rate. From what I could gather, there's a legal limit of 250MMBbl, which means that, effectively, the current 319MMBbl in the SPR is actually 69MMBbl (nice).

However, anything below 300MMBBl is uncharted territory, since there are structural concerns that start coming into play once you draw down to these levels. The salt caves start having structural integrity issues, and problems will start way before you reach the physical limit of 100MMBbl, under which there's no way to remove the oil from the underground salt caverns, kind of like the leftover hand soap below the tip of the tube of a soap dispenser.

One of the problems is that crude is like Turkish coffee, in that the sludge at the bottom is undrinkable. This means flow and quality are increasingly compromised the lower the SPR goes. The previous drawdown was, on average, 6MMBbl, but last week it was 3MMBbl.

Demand is probably on the rise with the recently increased military activity in Iran, which consumes a metric fuckton of jet fuel. There's also a push to lower gas prices in the US artificially. Crude oil prices are shooting up again. All of these factors seem to me like they would suggest that the drawdown should increase, not decrease. Are we going to see the SPR hitting a practical, real-life tank bottom sooner than expected?

Muwaffaq Salti, Al-Udeid, Ali Al-Salem, these types of primary forward bases have been rendered pretty much useless at this stage of the war. The U.S. is now extremely reliant on its carrier fleet in the Arabian Sea.

Lastly, in many cases, U.S. aviation is being forced to carry out secondary duties like defending UAE / Bahraini / Saudi airspace from drone attacks, due to critically low interceptor stockpiles. This limits their availability for combat missions.

This is also quite telling; the last time Iran’s attacks against Gulf states were this intense, Tehran was under constant bombardment. There hasn’t been a strike in Tehran for months, and most of western / central / eastern Iran is not being targeted at all.

12x (estimate) USAF F-16CJ with the HTS (HARM Targeting System) from the 52nd Fighter Wing, 480th Fighter Squadron in Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany are headed towards the Middle East (Jordan specifically), to suppress air defences with AGM-88 series anti radiation missiles (HARM/AARGM) and geolocate emissions with the AN/ASQ-213 HARM Targeting System (HTS) pod. F-16s from this particular squadron specialise in this mission given this equipment. Additional equipment, such as the Angry Kitten EW pod and JASSM cruise missiles, have also been used.

According to the IRGC, the fourth wave of Operation Nasr 2 targeted “KJL,” which it described as, “the US army's principal logistics and support center in West Asia at Mina Abdullah, Kuwait.” The statement said the facility “was set ablaze and destroyed” as a result of the strikes.

In the next statement in the series, the IRGC said the fifth wave of Operation Nasr 2 was launched at dawn by the Corps’ Navy, hitting “the NSI Management Center, the Command and Control Center, major warehouses containing military parts and equipment, and fuel depots belonging to the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.”

In another statement, the IRGC said the sixth wave of the operation targeted the US base at al-Azraq in Jordan. The Corps said the strikes were carried out by its Aerospace Force, which targeted shelters housing US F-15, F-16, and F-35 warplanes at the outpost and “eliminated a number of US MQ-9 strategic drones stationed at the base,” destroying the shelters and the unmanned aircraft.

⭕️ The Oil Market Is Burning Through the Buffers That Prevented a Larger Hormuz Shock

Two developments Thursday showed how fragile the market remains as fighting resumes and the Strait of Hormuz stays largely closed.

➤ The U.S. EIA said crude stocks at Cushing fell below 20 million barrels in June and may continue to be near “tank bottoms,” the minimum oil that must remain in tanks and pipelines for pumps to work. That means some barrels counted as inventory may be unusable, leaving the hub effectively closer to empty than the headline figure suggests.

➤ IEA chief Fatih Birol told Bloomberg that a historic 400-million-barrel emergency release, equal to roughly 2.5 million barrels a day, helped push oil prices down by $20.

➤ Higher production from the U.S., Brazil and Kazakhstan, national stock draws, and Saudi and Emirati efforts to bypass Hormuz have also limited the shock. But “none of them are endless,” Birol warned.

➤ Even expanded Saudi and UAE pipelines could replace only about half the oil normally moving through Hormuz.

➤ Birol said the danger is “not months. It is weeks.” A prolonged quasi-closure could push the global economy back into the “red zone,” with Asia facing the greatest risk and Europe vulnerable to diesel and jet-fuel shortages.

➤ Oil demand remains healthy, he said, meaning the market has not yet been balanced through demand destruction.
