Neelix was a great character once they got rid of Kes and effectively removed her from his character’s past — it was always a very possessive, groomer like relationship with rather creepy overtones.

Once that was gone he was valuable and somewhat relatable. His storylines with Naomi were wonderful.

I’d like to add the caveat that it was only once Scarlet Palmers was playing Naomi.

Garak works because they let him be nuanced, dark, and even outright evil at times. Too much of Neelix was aimed to be kid friendly. (Literally, its in the makeup design)

Watching Phillips as Spike in Avenue5 makes me wish we had THAT as Neelix

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Spike was the whole reason to watch the show.

"It's like slapping wet concrete"

[-] SippyCup@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

Ok kid friendly is one thing but he was dating a child

[-] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Ok this one really pisses me off. Stop applying human lifespans to ocampans. She was the equivalent of her early 20's.

Slag him off for the power/ experience imbalance and the creepy fuckin' predatory nature but do not infantalise an adult.

Nonsense, Neelix is precious

[-] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 10 points 1 week ago

At least once his pedo phase is behind him

[-] jaaake@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

It's real weird that he became the ships baby sitter after his child bride ran away from him. Every scene with him and kids makes me uncomfortable.

[-] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

I wouldn't go that far, but it must feel weird for someone with a life expectancy of probably 80 years to be intimate with someone in the single digits. Of course she looked fully grown, but still...

[-] Fawkes@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

Are you saying that nobody should be allowed to have a relationship with Ocampa, since their biology causes them to die of old age at 9 years old? Separate but equal?

[-] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago

I'd didnt say they shouldn't be allowed nor that they shouldn't want to. I am just saying that, assuming most intelligent races have something against pedophilia, intimate relationships with someone under the age of 10 would probably feel weird.

It reminds me a little of that Anime trope of the 1000 year old witch in the body of an 8 year old.

[-] Fawkes@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

I agree with the anime trope part, but that only complicates your position.

Is it strange because the anime girl is physically young? Then there's no issue with Kes.

Is it strange that she's psychologically immature? Then there's an issue with dating ANYBODY that is immature or sheltered, which is a much more difficult metric to gauge and standard to set.

Or is it an issue with her chronological age? Then nobody is ever allowed to have interspecies relationships, unless their aging speed matches.

[-] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

It reminded me of that trope, because both are cop outs to enable the sexualization of minors

It's insane how many people aren't able to accept that different SPECIES may have entirely different cultural norms. Not just ST fans, I see it a lot in SF&F

[-] Soggy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

On the other hand, it's all fiction written by humans for humans through the lens of human culture. It's really easy to not write fiction about "technically not pedophilia".

Any species with a short lifespan is off limits, by your logic.

through the lens of human culture.

This is dumb, any good alien story is about seeing the universe through the lens of a different culture.

[-] Soggy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Kinda, yeah. "You're really mature for your age" is fucking creepy.

any good alien story is about seeing the universe through the lens of a different culture.

That's not happening in a vacuum though. It is "different" specifically because of the comparisons to human cultures. There's this concept in science fiction called "cognitive estrangement", basically you use something novel to cast new light on the familiar. The alien culture becomes a fresh perspective on your own experience.

There's room for things that are truly bizarre and unrelatable but done correctly it's going to feel weird and unsettling. Cosmic horror type stuff.

[-] Fawkes@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

How was she a child bride? She was in her psychological mid 20's to 30's?

[-] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago

Have you seen the show? Intellectually she was maybe in her early twenties, more like late teens. And she had been with Neelix for some time at that point. It definitely felt like he groomed her.

[-] Fawkes@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Neelix had met Kes just a single time a month prior to them being introduced in the show. If that's grooming, then every vacation fling is also grooming

[-] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

I'm not saying he groomed her before voyager appeared. He was still doing it when they joined the crew. That whole relationship was just weird and the subsequent episodes with her basically begging to be bred didnt make it better

[-] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

Garak has a sense of humor. Neelix has a cheese that corrupts living things.

[-] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

To be fair, that cheese saves the day in Lower Decks.

[-] stsquad@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 week ago

He was never my favourite character but he played a valuable role showing how an alien could take to heart the ideals of the Federation.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 10 points 1 week ago

To be fair, Garak wasn't fucking a 4 year old.

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 9 points 1 week ago

I would tuvix neelix twice.

[-] TwodogsFighting@lemdro.id 4 points 1 week ago

Straight out the airlock.

[-] applebusch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

so if you tuvixed neelix, would that be splitting neelix into two separate people, nee and lix? in that scenario putting them back together would be ending two lives for the sake of one life, making it kind of the opposite of the original tuvix situation where youre sacrificing one life for two. then again we have to consider that the person we're saving is neelix in that scenario, so on the whole it might be better to leave him separated.

[-] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

You need to beam him with many others into one strange bio blob, so it's almost ethical to separate them again.
