I love football. I fucking love it. But I didn't watch one single match. Bought no merch. FIFA needs to be dismantled and reorganised under better management. But the, that's just one person's take.

[-] Ibisalt@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

✊ samen here.

[-] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I tried to find an in stock Verde kit but that was it. I listen and read commentary but honestly the amount of overturned bans, treatment of the Iranian team and the continued corruption of FIFA takes all the joy out of it

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 100 points 2 days ago

The whole fact that FIFA is willing to play soccer with dictators, ignore obvious human right violations and give trump a fake peace prize and over rule calls made should show that they're a corrupt organization that should be dismantled or at least completely reorganized.

[-] bloogoose@lemmy.zip 45 points 2 days ago

Even worse are the rabid fans that pump money into it all.

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 24 points 2 days ago

They could easily boycott a World Cup and bring all the changes into effect.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago

I don't think they're worse.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 2 days ago

Would be nice to see them protest the corruption but for most football fans, they just really love the game. They really shouldn't have to be in a position to protest so idk if it's fair to say they are worse.

That being said I'm a big proponent of voting with your wallet. So maybe watch all year but skip FIFA sponsored events?

[-] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 2 days ago

FIFA has been corrupt for decades. The fact that people still watch them tells you everything you need to know about sports entertainment.

[-] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

It's actually very on-brand for that organization, and the fact that people are surprised at that speaks volumes. I think they're mostly Americans just finding out

[-] Foni@piefed.zip 2 points 2 days ago

To be honest, they awarded the event during Trump's first term; no one in their right mind would have guessed that he would still be in office this year.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

What level of failure is it called when one bribes, bullies, cheats and has the home team advantage and STILL manages to lose?

[-] khaleer@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 day ago

comments of people trying to justify their wallet supporting dictatorship, orange overlord military special operations all around the world and quietly ignoring Epstein Files are to be expected, but erasing all things above with "I just like when ball is rolling" is just shamefull.

Look into your mirrors, and say to yourself "I just care about the ball" you clowns.

If they are US American or European they already do that with every purchase they make, every tax bill they pay, every pay check they labor for so what really is the difference for them?

[-] adarza@piefed.ca 31 points 2 days ago

task failed successfully.

the internet's gonna be consumed by this for weeks, instead of anything else he has done or will do. be very afraid of what happens next while your attention is elsewhere.

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 days ago

This is what irritating me the most about it. AFAIK the actual story is thus: Ref made a bad call, lots of people were upset about this call, FIFA began to review call, Trump heard about it and then made a call to the FIFA president, already in progress review concluded reversing call, life tried to move on, Trump made it about himself…

In the meantime Iran is still a thing, we’re still bombing people in the Caribbean, Cuba is still blockaded, Ukraine is still at war, and the list goes on and on and on and that’s it before we even get to the Epstein files and other shit.

[-] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 18 points 2 days ago

The red card was not rescinded, however the accompanying 1-match ban was suspended for 12 months. Wholly unprecedented in the history of the World Cup.

[-] Marthirial@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Our brains are not wired to handle complex systems but it is wired for stories. The FIFA trump fiasco is easier to keep track. The issue we need to improve is how to connect the topic to the endless failure of these asshole president of ours.

[-] fishy@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

Anybody with a functioning brain sees him as the turd he is, the problem is all those dumb fucks glued to conservative media that paints him as the perfect god emperor who's never misstepped.

[-] jollyrogue@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I think the call was fine, and it should have stood.

Whatever, the US is out via an embarrassing loss. 🥳

Unfortunately, Mexico lost too, and my World Cup is over.

[-] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I wasn’t even following the World Cup, I was perfectly happy with my newsfeed not containing sportsball.

[-] jollyrogue@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

Why are you commenting on a World Cup related post then?

Someone check the status of those couches

[-] Zidane@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

I'm super out of the loop. And can't be fucked looking up anything to do with trump or fifa... Any loremasters want to give a quick explanation?

[-] Tommelot@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Trump called his little fifart Infantini to reverse a red card. Something unprecedented in both the history of FIFA and the US, which says enough really.

Oh yeah, the team still lost to Belgium, a country that can't even speak Dutch properly ;)

[-] Zidane@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

Oh damn, that's crazy, thanks for the reply

[-] scutiger@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

It's not that crazy, most of the country speaks French.

[-] Tommelot@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Similar to French...

[-] thedarkfly@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

59 Dutch - 40 French - 1 German actually

[-] Zidane@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Profanity on MY internet?!? I think you mean fr*nch

[-] bananabread@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

They're better at Dutch than the Dutch tbh

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

He's the fifa world peace prize winner people! He's dedicated his life to achieving peace through football. Clearly he knows who should get a red card and who shouldn't. If the pope corrects a priest we see it as a learning opportunity. Why so much grief for a FIFA peace prize winner correcting a ref??
