Why is it called the Arab slave trade and the Atlantic slave trade instead of the Sahara slave trade and the European slave trade?

I love learning but there has to be some compound word in another language that describes finding out about something so obvious that you feel embarrassed to not have seen it before.
Just invent a german-sounding word and pretend that's what it is.
You might like to know what you're feeling is called Gestübel by the germans, by the way.
