Why are conservative nightmares always so based

Most people I know know that communism is materialist, but have no idea what materialist means. They either think it means obsessed with material possessions or pure empiricism. I keep saying things like "Do you think a thing still exists if no one is looking at or thinking about it? Then you're a materialist."
