these authorities are intended to be used only in exceptional circumstances and are not exercised lightly

Once again they promise never to use the crazy new powers they've just granted themselves for no obvious reason. What is even going on? Did the Liberal Party of Canada somehow get taken over by the same people that wrote Project 2026? Are they thinking fascism is inevitable so we might as well prepare for it? Assuming we have another federal election some day I get the feeling it's going to go very badly for them, but the damage they're doing will not be easy to repair.

The more I see of Carney's government the less I like it.

Can't expect better from a banker

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 20 points 3 days ago

It's definitely the style of this government's legislation. Bill C-22 is full of the same kind of thing: granting a sweeping power then advising that it shouldn't be abused, though that abuse will be legal. We're supposed to not notice, or to just trust them because they said they'd be nice.

Surveillance Bill C-22 for “assisting law enforcement” meanwhile the RCMP acts like a bunch of crooks assaulting indigenous individuals and harassing journalists and the liberals are over here telling us they need to be more powerful to “protect Canadians”

[-] grte@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

Yeah, trust Mark Carney, a guy who regularly misrepresents himself.

[-] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 14 points 3 days ago

I’m not convinced that carney isn’t a heritage foundation plant to be honest.

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

I have the same suspicion

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

Even if I did have full confidence and trust in the Carney government to never abuse these sweeping powers, I still don't want it because I wouldn't trust a MAGA-acolyte style future government from one of Poilievre's disciples not to abuse these exceptional powers.

The wealthiest 1 percent are responsible for the global rise in authoritarianism

[-] ProudCanadianCitizen@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

Will you all please can it with that 'wealthiest 1%'. 1% of seven billion people is 70 MILLION people. Almost twice the Canadian population. That is a LOT of people. Somehow, you imply that it is only a handful.

There goes our agricultural exports to the European Union down the drain.

First bill c-22 ruining our tech sector now this bs.

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

Could probably be workarounded by having EU-banned-pesticide-free certification for EU-bound exports while we eat the pesticides domestically as well as export them to the US and other nonchalant markets.

[-] Iamcanadian@piefed.ca 19 points 3 days ago

I’m disgusted that this has happened. I don’t know why it’s not getting media coverage and that nobody is up in arms about it.

The lobby registry also shows [Health Minister] Michel met with [pesticide industry group] CropLife in December and January. Roy Karam, her political adviser, has met with CropLife four times this year.

coincidence, I'm sure

We are living through Stephen Harper's second majority right now. And these feckless Liberals seem to be okay with it as long as Harper 2 is wearing their colours. And don't think I've forgotten about you, Lori Idlout, you fraud.

[-] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

I would argue that liberal voters don't wear the party like a brand in the same way that CPC voters do.

I know a lot of people who voted Liberal grudgingly, to keep Poilievre out of power. Carney seemed like a decent sort, although decidedly more conservative than they'd like.

They are PISSED at the party now.

I predict huge gains for the NDP, if Lewis can do a better job of managing his image than Singh did. (Sadly, it helps that he's white.)

[-] grte@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

By 'feckless Liberals' here I'm referring to the Liberal caucus. I give Liberal voters a lot more grace because, in my opinion, Mark Carney did a lot to misrepresent who he was before and during the election. But unlike voters, caucus has things they could do right now to stop this, now that it's clear who Carney is.

[-] definitemaybe@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Did he, though?

I was lucky enough to live in a riding with strong support for a different party, so I didn't need to vote strategically, but I'm glad Canadians largely did.

PP is almost Trump-level unhinged. As much as I hate the general move to neoliberal economic policy, reduction of regulations and lack of oversight (and Bill C-22), the cluster fuck of the PC party we have in power is still better than the alt-right MAGA-wannabees who would have won otherwise.

I don't think he was hiding his neoliberalism at all but, with the NDP imploding and the swelling support for the hateful bigotry party, the Liberals winning was the best possible outcome. A lot of voters were holding their noses last election.

What we really need in this country is Single Transferable Vote. So long as we use FPTP, we're going to oscillate between frying pan and fire, with regulatory lurch damaging Canada as a safe place for long-term capital investment.

[-] mister_newbie@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

Once again, a big fat 🖕 to the voters in the three by-elections' ridings that handed him his majority. Could've kept him a seat or two short and left Lewis with the balance of power.

I guess I'll add a more moderate take of "this is probably intended for absolute emergencies like a Biblical plague of locusts or something," but in the name of the Prophets, put guardrails on your emergency measures.

[-] o0evillusion0o@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago

Dammit Mark!

[-] Krusty@quokk.au 6 points 3 days ago

Cool. It's your idea Carney. Fill the fuckee up with this shit.

[-] ProudCanadianCitizen@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

Of more importance than WHAT can be used, is WHO can use it.

How does this bill address the issue of the general public having access to these deadly poisons?
