Not an RPG, but Cairn actually has this. Your bag items have physics, and there's a bit of squishing allowed, so you can try to fill holes with items that don't quite fit. You can also shake the bag to try and get items to settle into gaps. I spent so much time shaking my bag and trying to jam items in the smallest of gaps to squeeze everything together in hopes of fitting one more item. Great game in other aspects as well.

Props to Cairn its such a sick game for something most people would be very much so not interested in.

  • I'm playing it right now and I'm having such a great time with it.

There was a secret cubbyhole inside a cavern that it took me like 6 tries to get up to without falling and I felt sooo cool for doing it. Used up like half of my items, but oh well. :p

Fending off a horde of zombies while standing on your partner's overpacked bag, as they try to squish all the loot together so the zipper closes.

Or you're out of ammo, more packed at the bottom, so you run and throw things out onto the ground to get to the box (the box is locked with a circle of tape that you need a knife or key to cut)

If I was programming for a Resident Evil game, I'd make it so that if you lined up items all the way across the breifcase, they would disappear like Tetris.

Nah make it fun, each different way of lining up your items gives you different stat boosts. Like if you fill your suitcase with just green herbs then you are able to regenerate health or if you mix shotgun shells with fish then you can get ammo from fishing.

Tbf in this scenario it would 100% be the game dev who's an asshole for giving you an inventory space whose size is not a multiple of the size of the items

The page with all the different packing optima is one of my favorite pages on the internet: https://erich-friedman.github.io/packing/index.html

Take them out of the boxes. It'll be more fun too when needed.

What's the rules for this puzzle/challenge? Can't you just make the squares smaller, and then fit an infinite number of squares?
