The Ukrainians aren't even trying to get their "separatist regions" back anymore. Even the Russians aren't dumb enough to forget that abusing civilians is not going to allow them to accept a change in leadership later.

I realize that I've yet go ever ask but, why exactly is it called the Dontesk People's Republic? What was the impetus to choose the term "People's Republic" rather than just Dontesk Republic, or something else? I'm only aware of the large term progression of Dontesk up to the current war, but am unfortunately ignorant of its more fine internal politics.

In the Act on the Proclamation of State Independence of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), that was adopted in 2014, the document proclaimed: "The people of the Donetsk People's Republic have exclusive ownership of the land, its subsoil, airspace, water, and other natural resources."
