This started about 3 weeks ago. one of the handles on our kitchen cabinet just... snapped off, like, completely. It was one of those cheap brushed nickel ones that came with the house when we bought it in 2019, and honestly i always hated them. My partner said just leave it, we'll get a replacement, but i had a day off on tuesday and thought how hard can it be.

Went to a store. spent like 47 minutes in the hardware aisle, bought a handle that was almost the same but not quite, hole spacing was off by like 4mm. Drilled new holes, now there's a cabinet with 4 holes in it and two handles that don't match.

At this point i've committed. i can't have ONE nice handle and 22 ugly ones. so i went down a rabbit hole that night (it was like 11:30pm, bad idea) looking at kitchen handles. Ended up finding actually decent stuff, bought a set of matte black bar pulls, 128mm, enough for the whole kitchen. Not cheap, came to about $190 all up, but shipping was fast and they were solid.

here's where the TIFU actually happens.

I didn't measure the cabinet faces properly before drilling. i used the old hole spacing (96mm) as my guide for the first six cabinets before realising the new handles were 128mm centres. So now six cabinets have ghost holes behind the handle that you can see if you open the door at the right angle. My partner found them on saturday.

she was... quiet, which is worse than yelling tbh.

I've since filled them with wood filler and touched them up but you can still kind of tell. The handles look great though. genuinely. the kitchen looks a thousand times better. i just can't open cabinet number 3 from the left without having a small internal crisis.

TL;DR: replaced one broken cabinet handle, ended up buying a whole new set for the kitchen, drilled the wrong holes in 6 cabinets, hid it with wood filler, wife knows ๐Ÿ‘ .
