Hi, I’m a 30F who never really spends on myself at all and I’ve never had any gadgets besides my phone ever. My Mamaw is asking for a big gift idea and she spends up to $400. I thought now was the time to get an Apple Watch I’ve always wanted! I’d like to go with an older model that is MUCH more affordable (maybe like the $200 range?) but I know Apple starts messing up their older products. So any advice on a model to go with that will be reliable for several more years yet not break the bank, a sweet spot so to say? I don’t need anything super fancy just one that does the job, thanks!

Look into feature differences. But what I don’t see anyone saying is maybe get a used one with WatchOS 9. The new v10 is a shitshow

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

my first gen SE is still great. 👍 I would get the SE 2 if i was in the market for a new one.

Series 7 or 8 dnt feed the hype for the ultra…..

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Got a used mint condition AW 4 steel Cellular for 200 bucks. Besides software problems I'm not missing anything

I’d try to get a good deal for S8. Should be close to $200 and will last for years.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

The SE is their “affordable” model. It doesn’t come with all the same bells and whistles, but I rocked the first gen from when it came out to last month when I got the 9 because my battery on the SE couldn’t make it through a full round of golf with my Arccos sensors.

series 7 and onwards. i wouldn’t get the se just because it doesn’t have fast charging

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

SE2 I love if you go new but pre owned 7 is still a great choice

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I have a series 7, and it still looks just like series 9, and is just as capable as series 9 is.

IMO, this is the model to go with

Just 3 weeks ago i was able to buy a series 7 41mm brand new in box from a website called “datavision”. It was $180 (just under 200with taxes). I think they were getting rid of old inventory. Check and see if they still have them. I didnt want the SE because that one doesnt have the sensors for blood oxygen or EKG.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I just picked up a 42mm S8 from Target for $220 in a pre-BF sale.

What features are important to you?

We have series 6 and there have been no really compelling features that made me think I need that.

We recently got a friend a refurbished series 7 and that has already triggered fall detection when they stumble and helps monitor sleep.

Here is Apples refurbished site that has full new watch warrantee. Amazon also has refurbished items with a shorter warrantee.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I have the SE 2nd gen and it’s great for what i need it for also fairly affordable. Got it for hear rate monitor and medication scheduling but i have found it to be so useful for much more than that. It’s great not having to pull my phone out all the time for notifications and you can set up apple pay on it and just tap your wrist at checkout

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Here’s a better question: can the older versions run the Snoopy watch face? I think at some point, they all “work” but you miss a lot of the newer faces.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I have the 5 no issues. If I was buying now I would get the 7 - 9.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I have a second generation SE myself and before that one came out I was always looking at a second hand Series 5 or a first generation SE.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Series 5 or higher. Only thing I would add to that is that the first generation SE doesn't seem worth it since the second generation SE

The first generation is basically a worse Series 5 with it having pretty much the same specs but without always on display and without ECG.

Hope this somewhat helps and guys please, please correct me if I say something wrong here. This is very much based on what I know and my own opinion

Series 7 is my go to, you get the nicer looking screen design and major features but for quite a bit cheaper even if you’re not doing used

Buy one on Black Friday. I got my SE2 for $200

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I recently got the SE and it works well

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I’d get the SE, unless you know the lack of always-on display is a deal-breaker. For people who have always worn classic watches, being able to always see the time is a basic feature. If you don’t normally wear watches and are fine with having to do a gesture or tap to see the time, get the SE, otherwise get an older series something (7? 8?).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I hear you!! Some people like “always on”. For me .. don’t need my watch to be on when I’m not looking at it. Mine set at “wake on wrist raise”. Always on dramatically reduces battery life on my AW6 SS.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The screen never turns on when I raised my hand. But it did flash on and off while I steered my car, so in theory it does work. I’m now keeping it always on :D

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

It works fine for me when I do a big “oh look at the time” or “hurry up buddy” motion but when I actually just want to check time or something it’s usually a subtle flick and that doesn’t trigger it at all. So always on is a must for me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

You can disable the always on display

Christmas joke (NSFW) A 17 year old male walks into a drug store. He says "I've been invited to Christmas dinner at my new girlfriend's house. Afterwards I hope there is a chance I get lucky, you know what I mean"

Clerk: "How about condoms then? They could come in handy. Here's a pack." The young man after paying walks to the door, stops, smiles, comes back: "you know what, the mom is also smoking hot, I think I'll take another pack, just in case I get extra lucky."

Christmas eve comes around, the boy sits at the dinner table and doesn't say a word. After a while his girlfriend says: "if I had known you were so quiet, I wouldn't have invited you." the young man replies "if you had told me your dad works at a drug store, I wouldn't have come."

My partner is still using a 3 so don’t worry about older ones being “messed up”

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I had the 0, 3, 4, and 8. The 0 -> 3 was no difference 4 had a bigger screen, 8 had a tiny bigger screen but I was fine with the 4. Get the SE.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Get a refurbished one from Apple. Get a stainless steel version. Looks more traditional with bands. Has a more scratch resistant sapphire glass face.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Got the cellular version of the Series 7 earlier this year for ~$260 brand new from Walmart’s website. It was a huge upgrade over the Series 3 I had for years

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Series 7 got a screen size upgrade, and the swipeable keyboard. Series 8 and 9 don’t add all that much. I’d grab a 7 if you can. And I say that as a Series 5 owner 😄

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Series 7 is still good enough.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

series 7 from apple certified refurbished is perfect

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

What phone do you have that you plan on pairing to your new Apple Watch?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I have a 12 pro max!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I’ve just got the smaller size 9 and love it

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

See if you can get a new Series 7 or 8 at a price closer to the SE 2nd Gen, imo that will be much more worth it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I have an SE2 (which is the SE is the market now). There isn’t anything about newer models that I think I’m missing side from always on display (which I’m not even sure I’d want if it was an option). It works great and is still lightning quick

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

walmart will have the 2023 SE for $179 this week

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I recently replaced my broken series 6 with the same basic model from back market. Battery life looks really good so far. Was just over 200 but I bet they are cheaper now as this was before the newest models launched.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

You can actually get the Series 9 for $399, which will be a little over $400 after taxes. Aluminum case, GPS only with a rubber or textile band. I’d go all out and ask for that one if I were you, so that it works for as long as possible. If you can afford to do so, maybe tell your mom that you’ll cover the price difference after taxes.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I bought a 6 a couple months back and don’t regret it. I will say getting a 7 gets you a keyboard. I use the mic for inputting words instead of a keyboard, so no big deal to me. Plus I downloaded a keyboard for it, so, the 6 is just fine for me. The SE 2nd gen doesn’t have the same features of the 6/7/8…. I’d look at the specs and see if that works for you.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I have the 6. I love it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Definitely grab the SE. sounds perfect for you

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

SE 2 is your best choice. only concern i have is my battery health tanking to 94% since feburary....

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

I have the SE (44mm) I got it on sale a few months ago for $250 I got the newest update recently. I love it no issues

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Definitely the S7. You have AOD, fast charging and thin bezels for a very decent price

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Black Friday would probably be good time to get one
