I use my Apple Watch to keep track of my health, and I've noticed that it regularly reminds me to stand up. I'm curious if there's actually scientific support for the idea that standing up regularly improves health.

Are there any studies or research that demonstrate the positive effects of standing up throughout the day? I'm interested in knowing if it's a factor that can genuinely impact health positively, or if it's just a nice feature without concrete scientific backing.

If anyone has links to studies or if you've personally noticed improvements in health by following these reminders, I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences!

Yes, there are many scientific studies that standing regularly (and not keep seated for long periods of time) improves your health.

The idea is not really to make you stand (it’s scientifically proven that both sitting all day and standing all day is bad in a different way), the idea is to get you moving, because what is clearly bad for you is keeping the same posture for a prolonged amount of time. Other devices call the same feature “Move alert” and not a “stand alert”

I think the stand alert actually says to stand and walk around a minute. If you are at your desk and you get the alert, you will not satisfy the standing requirement if you just stand there for a minute.

Regardless of what any text about the standing says, you only need to have your watch pointed down for one minute to get the stand credited. That can be standing, or sitting with your wrist dangling. I do the latter when I've stood during that hour but while carrying things.

I agree. When you have a standing desk setup for work or other daily activities, calling it the “stand” ring can be a misnomer.

Like the others said, calling it the “stand” ring can be a misnomer and you are meant to actually walk around for a minute or two.

The study in question: https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M17-0212

The researchers here call for more frequent moving than every 50 minutes.
