Because the drones are hard to detect, jam, shoot down, have at least 120km range, uses visuals + local map so GPS jamming is useless against it and can daisy chain the comm link.

Not like they don't know it, they launch hundreds of those at civilian houses and infrastructure.

It's meant as a direct answer to the article title, which asks about the 'martian' drones specifically.

Autonomous Ai drones roaming the country side was a plot point in An American War. It wasn't a good thing in the book.

Maybe we shouldn't judge real world technology off of plot points in works of fiction. Fiction must tell a story that sells copies, first and foremost.

Better weapons tend to filter down.

  • first you’re a fan because it allows the underdog to continue resisting Russian aggression
  • then a smaller number are a fan as it becomes a possibility for any random country, making it more challenging for the us to extend power
  • then you hate it as some countries use it for aggression or repression
  • then it becomes a problem as any random militia might use that as a tool to stoke terror in developed countries

-then an even smaller group are fans as they aren't getting targeted by the drones. Yet.

Rules:

  1. No sympathy with the enemy or its collaborators. Russian and North Korean soldiers are fascists committing a genocide. Remember that.

  2. Objective and factual reporting from the battlefield, parliaments, etc. is encouraged, even if it's about bad news for Ukraine.

  3. Insulting Putin and his cronies (Orban, Trump, Musk,...) is absolutely fine but don't use homophobic or similar language against them. Members of the queer community don't deserve to be compared to that scum. Also: Putin disciminates against gay people. If you do as well, you're part of the problem.

  4. Don't insult or use overly harsh language against other commentators.

  5. Don't submit direct links to Twitter/X and Truth Social posts. You may: Post a screenshot + quote, do a full quote and name the author, direct link to a proxy service like xcancel.com, deep link an image embedded in a tweet because Lemmy will cache a copy.

  6. Don't just complain about paywalls. If you encounter one, be a sport and link to an archived version instead. Use Firefox + uBlock Origin with the annoyances filters enabled and https://filterlists.com/lists/bypass-paywalls-clean-filter to avoid encountering many in the first place.
