As of today, there isn't a place in the US where gas is below $4/gallon, according to GroundNews

[-] Burray_Mookchin@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

A Gallon is 4 Liters right? I just checked the current Diesel price in my country and it's at 9.80USD/Gallon. I hate to agree with the Donald here, but those prices are actually peanuts.

I'm really tired of everyone comparing the US to countries with completely different fuel consumption profiles.

In 2024, 72% of all US freight was transported by trucks. For reference, the EU average was 25% road (sea was 67% with optimal fuel efficiency). Freight is also transported over much longer distances, making gas prices a larger part of operating costs. So already, high gas prices hit much harder in the USA than most places.

Secondly, population density and existing infrastructure require personal car use. There is almost never a rail or public transport option. Despite lower prices and higher average income, fuel spending is a larger percentage of household spending in the US than the EU (especially among the poorer population).

Yes you're right, I agree with you that the conditions are very different because of the reasons you mentioned and the other financial factors like food and rent are probably different too. I admit my original comment comes of very ignorant rereading it now a couple hours later, sorry about that

[-] MasterNerd@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 days ago

Well it's a bit more of a problem when pretty much no infrastructure exists for public transit or cycling for the vast majority of the US

[-] Th3D3k0y@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

We in the USA prepay to a degree for gasoline. Our taxes subsidize the at pump costs to a significant portion. We get charged twice if not more for what we are considering outrageous prices in the US.

I went from paying about 24 dollars a week to get to and from work, do errands and child care. Now I'm up to 70+ a week.

For your country what did diesel cost last year?

[-] Jyek@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

All of the gas around here is under $4...

[-] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago

It's under $4 here, it's 3.97.............................

Lots of "peanuts" were burned up to fly a Boeing 747 or a chopper to a fucking golf course.

[-] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

A station in Iowa had gas for $1.85...but I was down to less than $2/gallon

... isn't $1.85 under $2.00? I swear 1 came before 2 when I learned.

Welcome to the trump era, where up is down and black is white.

I dunno how much longer Bobby John from Oklahoma can take filling up his RAM 3500 Dually lifted XTREME offRoad Pavement Princess Edition™ @ $150 a pop for much longer, Mr. Pedo. You're making your cult followers very angry!

Keep it up!

[-] the_tab_key@lemmy.world 71 points 1 week ago

The baseline tank size for a ram 3500 is 32 gallons. Diesel is $5.74/gal on average in the Midwest. So a full fill up is ~$184/tank. You underestimated that, yikes.

For more fun, you can also upgrade to a 50 gallon tank, making it $287/tank.

These get a respectable ~18 mpg, so $0.32 per mile.

Just throwing money away

[-] socsa@piefed.social 31 points 1 week ago

They get 18mpg when you drive them like a fucking baby on the highway. Your average idiot who floors it at every stoplight, and does 90 on the interstate gets half that.

Good thing he's spending hundreds of millions of dollars to replace incumbent Republicans with candidates whose only personality trait is praising trump without question...

All this shit is going to backfire in the general, Republicans won't vote D, they just won't vote at all

We are ruled by the dumbest dipshits on the planet.

They're dumb but they're also ruthless, they rape and kill children with their bare hands, don't underestimate them just because they're dumb.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 32 points 1 week ago

What does a gallon of gas cost? $100?

[-] regedit@lemmy.zip 30 points 1 week ago

Even more fucked when you consider these are the prices in the US with oil subsidies. It would be so much more expensive without them, and only gas-powered vehicles would be paying, and not all of us...

Americans have had cheap fuel since forever

They also seem to like stupid vehicles that are incredibly inefficient

I love my little electric car. I have solar at home and have never once charged at a station and paid for it

[-] roker 2 points 6 days ago

you don't have to pay at a charge station? Did I miss something?

[-] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

I've never had to use a charge station

I charge for free with my solar system

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

They implied they charge off their solar panels at home. However, there are some free charging stations out there. They're usually slower rates and at places like libraries, but they exist.

[-] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 27 points 1 week ago

It's a peanut, Michael! How much could it cost?

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 week ago

also, peanuts now $29 a can.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 22 points 1 week ago

I mean yeah, we are sacrificing so much, but the pain is temporary, and a small price to pay for giving Iran a massive strategic boost they couldn't have gotten any other way!
