After The New York Times reported that the administration had identified 384 foreign-born Americans as targets for denaturalization, Fox News host Will Cain asked Vice President JD Vance in an interview, “Could the law lead you to a place where we’d see accountability in the form of denaturalization or deportation from people who come to this country, legally or illegally, and take advantage of America?” Vance responded that the administration would “absolutely” be looking at how to denaturalize citizens and claimed that under the Biden administration there was a “big blurring of the lines between illegal and legal immigration.”

According to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, denaturalization has historically been rare. It is typically only used in cases in which there is proof that a person was naturalized when they were not eligible, for example if a person misrepresented or concealed information during the naturalization process that would disqualify them from U.S. citizenship.

But in June 2025, the Trump Department of Justice released a policy memo expanding the administration’s “priorities for denaturalization.” The memo not only outlines new categories of immigrants who could be prioritized for denaturalization, but specifically warns that “the Civil Division retains the discretion to pursue cases outside of these categories as it determines appropriate.”

The official DHS twitter account tweeted not too long ago that they want to deport 100 million people. There aren't that many immigrants in the US in total, naturalized or otherwise. The inescapable conclusion is that they intend to strip citizenship even from natural-born citizens who they decide are their political enemies.

[-] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 37 points 2 weeks ago

Can't imagine losing 1/3 of your population would have any larger ramifications elsewhere.

[-] baronvonj@piefed.social 14 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah Trump is trying to redefine to whom birthright citizenship should apply. He is actually the only sitting president to attend the SCOTUS oral arguments, and he did that over the birthright citizenship executive order. So it wouldn't be a surprise if they're including the people they don't think should have been considered natural born in that number.

[-] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Hard to see how even scotus would find a reason to betray an amendment of the constitution, which they don't have the authority to do. But they've done it for decades on other amendments so we will see. They think the republic is dead already, it's only us citizens that are still contesting it.

But with the scotus decision to disallow nationwide injunctions, there is nothing to stop the administration, or a future one, from rounding people up illegally and doing whatever with them.

I thought the ramifications of that decision would have been obvious but everyone is still oblivious, I'm sick of explaining it in detail.

Roberts and his fascist cronies have done it before. Consider what they've done to nullify the equal protection clause, the emoluments clause, and much of the 14th Amendment.

[-] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

Even before, before most of us were born, the 4th amendment was in effect cancelled to a large degree. The 10th obviously has long long been dishonored with an ever more powerful federal government disallowed in the bill of rights, the 5th amendment with asset forfeitures without due process of law. I am forgetting something here too.

This court is just not pretending anymore, but this has been a half century in the making.

This is who and what the Republicans and conservatives have always been, at root.

Never believe them when they - or those adjacent to them - start piping up with some horseshit about "true" conservatives.

Also, "take advantage of America" - fuck this asshole. The person doing that most egregiously, and practically rubbing all of our noses in it is the pedo-in-chief and his family. They are self-dealing right out in the open and all of these fuckers should be in prison for not only the prior crimes, but the crimes they have committed just since January of 2025.

[-] applebusch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 weeks ago

no they should be dead

[-] BigBrownDog@lemmy.world 34 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

You can take my citizenship, it means nothing to me anymore. But you'll have to take my Costco membership from my cold, dead hands.

[-] GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 2 weeks ago

They can't take the Costco membership away, and it's valid at Costco locations worldwide!

[-] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 33 points 2 weeks ago

In the same way that the solution to the Tolerance Paradox is to not tolerate intolerance, such threats to strip citizenship away from naturalised individuals should result in the would-be perpetrator’s citizenships being denaturalised instead. There should be no room for such hatred in modern society.

I'll be honest, I've had thought experiments of where we go from here once this is all over. I cannot think of anything that doesn't result in either prolonged right wing terrorism or their projections being practiced on them. I'm not calling for harm, but man, they've backed themselves and everyone else into an uneasy corner.

[-] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 5 points 2 weeks ago

I am on team 'fulfill projections on them'. I don't want to start a fight, but I will finish it on terms that don't suck for me and other decent people.

If blood has to be spilled, it should be conservative.

[-] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

As a trans person with jewish and indigenous ancestry, fuck them all. The entire empire must fall.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

The last year and a half has finally made me understand why "re-education camps" have been tried.

I mean, what else can you do? How are we supposed to live side by side with people who literally want our friends and loved ones dead?

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

It wouldn't take long if you removed fox news. Studies have shown just supplanting fox news with corporate media leads to rapid de-radicalization. They of course go back to that addictive fox news when the study is over, but it just shows that it can be done easier than we might believe.

I think people forget that these peoples viewpoints are being constantly reinforced everyday, multiple times a day.

Dont worry people. While the nazis did this exact same thing, its different because they spoke German.

[-] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 weeks ago

Could they start with Elon Musk, Melania Trump and Peter Theil?

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

How about Vance and his wife?

[-] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Trump is only half American too

[-] Blibly@lemmy.world 27 points 2 weeks ago

I'm unironically at the point where I would absolutely vote for the person who promises to exile every Trumper in this country. So...

[-] ViceroTempus@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago

I honestly believe that a lot of higher officials should be hanged for treason. Starting with Trump and working our way down until justice is fully served.

[-] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

No matter what, it's going to take decades to undo Trump's damage and frankly some of it is permanent. I expect no less than the next Dem President to be a full on leftwing dictator. Tear down the border wall, naturalize a shitload of immigrants, pack the court, yank every penny of aid to Israel, shutter every private prison, send the Nat Guard to Bezo's house, and delete every record of student loan debt.

[-] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

You do realize they are fixing elections. There might not be a non republican president again for some time.

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'll believe 2020 was the last free election in this country.

Can someone tell me how republicans and conservatives are not terrorists?

Like, legitimately, how do they not cause massive amounts of harm and instill terror in large groups of people?

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

They're not because they defined terrorists as anything but them.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.cafe 6 points 2 weeks ago

We do NOT have to accept their propaganda. The Dems have always allowed the right to define EVERYTHING for decades. WE have to do our own branding, of both our side and theirs, and then drown them out.

We are past the point of doing this peacefully. We all need to wake up and arm up. I really hope I am wrong but we will see come November. Gerrymandering a district to the point of one side or the other really comes at a cost. In reality it make a lot of weak district that can be over turned if everybody gets their lazy asses out to vote. If we do not vote like it is the end of America in the midterms there is going to be violence. I can't see anyway out of it.

There are a lot of foreign corporations operating in the US. Is this push for denaturalization only against humans?

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

That's always the case. Paramount is seeking approval for up to 100% foreign ownership:

Remember: America First!

Don't you dare ask any questions about how Donnie is doing Putin's bidding or why Saudis own a lot of shit here or why Israeli citizens have healthcare and YOU DON'T!

MURICA! USA! USA! USA!

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

I say we take their citizenship instead. Just imagine if these hatful people were left out. They might for the first time in their life experience real hardship.

[-] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 12 points 2 weeks ago

There was a time when I wanted peace among all Americans. I now no longer consider members of the Dogey to be American, and want to fight a bloody war against them. They are enemies, who wish to murder the innocent and to enslave.

There cannot be peace in our time, because the Dogey are fundamentally evil. Until the cancers of fascism, elitism, and conservatism is removed, all the good people in America will suffer.

Hopefully, I and many others will live to see a better America. Or Americas, as the case may become.

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

If it's either/or, I'll take justice over peace every time.

If there's one thing the truly religious hate, it's people with the wrong Sky Daddy

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 7 points 2 weeks ago

It's the same sky daddy. They just don't agree on the details.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

That's the irony.

Many xtians and not a few Jews have taken issue with me online when I refuse to accept the provincial and presumptuous moniker of "[g]od", but instead, either point out it's their god (lowercase), or just use the appropriate name: Jehovah/Yahweh/Allah, because they are all the same, as all of these are the name of the god from the Abrahamic religions. Just talking about "God" with capital-G without pointing out that the god they are referring to is not Zeus or Odin or Apollo, is just accepting their framing.

Neither xtians nor Muslims tend to appreciate people pointing out that they have basically retconned Judaism and forked a new BS (Belief System).

Reminding them that their god is all the same god is not something they want to admit, but also cannot refute.

[-] watson387@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago

Exactly. You couldn't make this shit up...

[-] bulwark@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Asmongold, Harrison Smith, Laura Loomer and Steve Bannon are calling for the deportation of Muslims. This is a Zionist agenda.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

I don’t wish death or violence on anyone, but if Asmongold fell into one of those industrial metal grinding machines I’d probably crack a smile when reading the article. Actual waste of flesh, that one.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 7 points 2 weeks ago

I've been saying this to my naturalized citizens friends since the beginning: They don't even respect Birthright Citizenship, and that's for people who were actually born here. They certainly aren't going to respect citizenship granted by some other administration.

Bottom Line: If you were born somewhere else, they want you out.

[-] ViceroTempus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Don't worry I'm sure we can just vote ourselves out of this. I mean the disenfranchisement will be like 10x worse than the 2024 election, with people already in concentration camps.

But surely we can vote our selves out of this. /s
