Have never animated myself, but I would think a local expression remains true: "perfect is enemy of being done".
So I'd say, even if what you make is far from ideal, trying is already a feat by itself!
Also don't get sad if it doesn't come as it was in your head. Rather, think how you could improve. Though also, maybe avoid creating your "opus magnum" at first, focusing on small projects at first to get used with the process.
And on animation software, from what I follow on the matter out of curiosity, apparently Blender is considered one. If so, maybe then Source Film Maker and Koikatsu (latter +18) could be considered as such too. And if you like RWBY's animation from season 4 onward, apparently the software Rooster Teeth would use is called "Maya" (don't remember the original one). And an exercise on patience, but the animated skit Songs for a Hero comes from was made fully in a video editor timeline, so there's this option too.
