I think what we need is for communities to be forced to choose a default language. Leaving it undefined by default makes the language filter useless.

Fwiw last I checked (and this may have been fixed since, haven't reviewed), the Lemmy software was bad about not providing any feedback when communities set their languages, meaning if people tried to post or comment with their defaults as-is (which back then was Undetermined as I recall), they simply couldn't and Lemmy wouldn't indicate why.
Due to this lack of feedback, I think many communities opted for undetermined to avoid confusing people by appearing broken. If I'm mistaken and/or this has since been adjusted to provide better feedback, let me know!
This. Instead of relying on users to select a language for each post, there should be a language selected for the community, and the ability to filter communities accordingly.
We have the technology. Current analysis tools can detect language from text and via image-to-text, from images. /Said from my bed while having no coding skills whatsoever.
Just keep boredly blocking like the rest of us.
While you can set your language preferences, it is recommended to leave undefiend checked . So many posters don't declare their language you will forever be blocking users and communities from the all page.
Many client apps don't even offer the option.
Use a client app that does?
It’s not about the reader, it’s about posters marking the posts appropriately. Good luck getting everyone to abide without making it mandatory.
(It should be mandatory)
Nein. Lernst deutsch.
Pffft :)
In the browser (because everyone uses a different app) click on you username and settings. Scroll down to "Languages" and unselected undetermined and any non-English languages.
This should make sure that you only see English content, even if it also removes all the undetermined (read unlabeled or mixed) content.
Yeah, but like 98% of all Lemmy content is “Undetermined”…
I know what you mean. All these foreigners posting in gibberish. It’s almost like the web has now gone world wide. Who’d’ve thunk it? Like someone else said just scroll past them… or learn a second/third/fourth language and enjoy even more excellent content from all across the globe.
I wouldn’t call it excellent. I learned enough German to kinda understand it and all I got was scared of the rechtsextreme and sturgeon puns. I swear the Germans on Lemmy are just like the other people on here
Yeah. That’s a good point well put. I probably should’ve used the word diverse rather than excellent…
By there I guess you have Lemmy? I am looking at this post from mbin(but it's same in kbin) and we do have list in settings of languages you want to appear on your timeline
I sometimes forget we’re federated… and not everyone is a lemmy.
There is. Not sure what he's on about. On my server I see english, spanish, and undefined posts since those are the three languages I have selected in my profile.
Just keep blocking the communities, eventually you’ll get most of them, and then it’s only an occasional one now and then.
wouldn't it be faster just to scroll past? I mean, I see fairly frequent posts in German, fewer from other languages, but they're a tiny fraction of the total, even so.
(im on kbin, pretty much exclusively browse all)
In your user settings, you can select the languages you want
