Going out with friends to places with my old trigger foods (like pizza) - even if I don't have any at that moment, can trigger a back ground food noise for a long time after... i'll be thinking of the pizza for weeks. I don't really have a solution for this, just recognizing its a craving and not a hunger.
It's plain old bread and butter, especially if toasted to perfection. Or croissants with butter. My "solution" is just complete abstinence because I know if I even eat a little, I will end up eating a whole lot and like you said it's not really a solution because I'll just keep thinking of it for ages and ages.
I'm lucky I can still eat the butter!
