Ah right, i had this oversized computer case with a built-in USB-hub. Accidentally touching the metal frame of the plug with a cable or stick before contact, caused the display to go black until restart. I suspect some grounding+esd issues.

I mean for such an archaic connector signal integrity is just propaganda.

When I was young, my Atari ST's video out was a DIN-13 connector. They were as rare as hens' teeth, and my monitor was an analog RGB Magnavox 8CM515 with something else, so this sort of setup was literally what I had for about 4 years. Worked great, with the extra 'feature' that the whole display would twitch slightly to the side every time the floppy drive's track stepper motor would move on disc seeks :-)

The signals on those wires are so slow, they are practically DC...

Cable companies. Wires carry current, cables carry data.

[-] lemmyman@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Believe it or not, data is carried by current

[-] pankuleczkapl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 days ago

False. Wires are used for many purposes, among others carrying mechanical loads or electric current. Cables, on the other hand, are bundles of wires carrying electric current for any purpose whatsoever, including supplying power to equipment and carrying data.

I think it was a deliberate choice so the first thing that comes to mind isn’t cable tv companies. Also, data does move via current.

"Cable" means a bundle of wires with insulation and whatever other accessories they need to function.
