Nice job FCC and CBS, way to Streisand Effect that shit. Talarico is right about one thing, the Trump administration must be really worried that Talarico has a chance to flip Texas.

[-] turdburglar@piefed.social 14 points 2 months ago

i think they’re more worried about jasmine crockett so they blew this dude up

I've been following this race since it started and I heartily disagree. I think Talarico's positions are largely to the left of Crockett. He's also better at weaving his policy positions into his life story and creating a hopeful image of the future, and is definitely a better orator.

He's one of the only politicians I know regularly hammering Christian nationalism and oligarchy and who openly condemns what's happening in Gaza. Crockett doesn't talk about any of that. Don't get me wrong, I think Crockett is great, and would vote for her in a heartbeat against most other candidates.

Also, Talarico's been in this race way longer than Crockett, who jumped in after Colin Allred dropped out, so Talarico's campaign in Texas has been much larger than hers from the beginning.

Guy sounded like he was straight up channeling Obama throughout most of his interview with Colbert.

It was kinda creepy, but not in a bad way.

[-] turdburglar@piefed.social -3 points 2 months ago

i’m just not jazzed about another christian straight white dude for the senate. diversity is important.

[-] Macchi_the_Slime@piefed.blahaj.zone 21 points 2 months ago

But... if he's actually to the left of her, isn't that more important that just picking diversity for diversity's sake? Like am I missing something here? If he's actually to the left of her, why should she get the support?

[-] obvs@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

Would she be so far to the right of him that it does damage?

Because it's a question of substance.

The whole point of Affirmative Action was "All things being equal, diversity is better than homogeneity."

Even if he was to the left of her, she's likely to bring up some issues that black women care about and that white men don't even realize are issues.

So yes, if there's a substantive difference between their policies, that should be brought up. But if the things they support are substantially almost the same, there's some validity in the fact that she brings a perspective which is significantly underrepresented.

"All other things being equal" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. The fact that she took one of those AIPAC affiliate sponsored fealty trips to Israel to tour the iron dome already had her way higher on my shit list on at least that issue even with Talarico still using all that "Israel has a right to defend itself" language and near as I can find has stopped short of calling it a genocide. Talarico at least has enough of a spine according to Drop Site News to call them atrocities and war crimes and supports banning offensive weapons which as far as I can find Crockett doesn't. That seems like a pretty big difference and that's just the first one I found with barely any digging.

[-] obvs@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

It’s not doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

You gave literally what my last paragraph asked for.

[-] exaybachae@startrek.website 7 points 2 months ago

Nope, picking the best candidate regardless of their skin or sex or height or religion or other irrelevant characteristics is the only right choice.

Naturally trends in those categories will tend to adhere to their representation in society. If there are more tall white males pursuing political positions, than the best option will tend to be a tall white male.

And that shouldn't matter.

[-] turdburglar@piefed.social 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

it shouldn’t matter, but it does. also, you’re assuming that the ‘best candidate’ can be defined. by what, exactly? how do you decide who is the ‘best candidate’?

your criteria may not be the same as a young black woman from the southern us.

we have no young black women in our senate.

we have plenty of christian white men.

i repeat, diversity is important.

maybe not to you, but to young black women. and me.

[-] exaybachae@startrek.website 1 points 2 months ago

Why is diversity important? How does being a black woman improve their ability to serve their constituents?

Answer succinctly, then I will ask 4 more questions, and your answers, if honest, will prove me right.

[-] turdburglar@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

it seems like you’re not arguing in good faith, but sure:

not all constituents have the same needs.

there are things that matter greatly to one community, of which other communities are completely unaware.

being a young person, being a woman, and being black, brings perspectives to the table with which a straight white man has no experience or even awareness.

i really don’t need any more questions from you, but thanks for the offer.

[-] exaybachae@startrek.website 0 points 2 months ago

I didn't express any criteria for best.

That's for the voter to decide.

I did express what characteristics should be excluded from evaluation, and it should be pretty clear as to why.

[-] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You think the troglodites claiming to be Christian for politics actually believe any of it?

You can't be a Christian and modern Republican at the same time, they are wholly incompatible belief systems regardless of what they want to claim.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah, he's a preacher, so he's either delusional or a conman. Not a good start when we're looking for people to fight MAGA.

I don't trust religious freaks, even if they say they're on our side. They're weirdos, and when it comes down to it, they are going to side with the rest of the superstitious fools over normal people.

Why link this internet personality instead of the actual video?

To demonstrate the coverage that a relatively milquetoast interview is now getting because of CBS's shenanigans

[-] krashmo@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

I think it was a very important interview. "There's nothing Christian about Christian Nationalism" is quite possibly the most effective idea to popularize in national politics. It's self evident to anyone paying attention but that's the thing, many aren't. Democrats should be absolutely hammering this point in an effort to break Trump's hold over cultural Christians but for some reason they have barely even tried that angle.

So many people just go along with what everyone around them is doing but most of them at least want to be good people. A ton of them think Christianity is their path to get there so when they hear that Trump is the Christian candidate that's all it takes. They're not really paying attention to what he's actually doing. If you can drive a wedge between him and that label he's in huge trouble. That's why they're scared of Talarico.

[-] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

That interview was anything but milquetoast. I think it's a landmark in terms of dealing with the Christian nationalist belief system. I'm atheist but even I can see that dealing with Christians who've been sold on the Christian nationalist agenda can't be done through the lens of non-religious attitudes.

[-] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 months ago

I don’t watch CBS or Colbert, so I’d never have known about this if they hadn’t tried to suppress it.

Get wrecked fuckers. I only know this exists because you wanted me to not know. And that’s hilarious.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 2 months ago

talirico is a christian, so they kinda are afraid of a "true christian" on the other side and not siding with evangelicals.

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago

Lol, 7.3 million views as of now.

[-] Themistocles@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Let’s bring back moral integrity into our political candidates. Would love to see Talarico take a run for the presidency in 2032

[-] blitzen@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago
[-] Themistocles@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Senate terms are 6 years and I want him to win in Texas first

[-] blitzen@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

Fair enough. I had mistakenly thought he was running for the house. In any case, with noting Obama served less than half of his only senate term.

[-] Ulvain@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

President chairman Chancellor Trump might still be alive and in power by then

[-] blitzen@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

If that's the case, we have way bigger issues than who'll run in 2032.

[-] rajano@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago

I seriously doubt he will be either.

[-] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

FCC = fucking, cuck, cunts.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 months ago

apparently NETFLIX isnt purchasing CNN along with WB. so its likely ELLISON will have CNN eventually, but not til after the midterms. they really wanted cnn before the midterms.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 2 months ago

"Well, shit, that didn't work either. It's almost like we're all dumbasses." - MAGA again
