Take a look at Meta's social media market share; people don't give a shit about their data.
That's not my point. Do you really think would people want to live out the rest of their existence in a digital space under the dictatorship of some power-hungry billionaires? If they can even be arsed to do anything, they'd most likely abandon it after a few years (just like what's happening to the metaverse and every other similar online space already) leaving you spending your days in a literal void.
If anything they'd just shut it off, killing any consciousness trapped in the simulation.
But my point is I think you underestimate the amount of people who would bw interested regardless of all the negatives.
Maybe I still have too much faith in humanity, but no, I don't think I underestimate the amount.
