European organizations are about to launch their own social media platform, W, amid rising tensions with the United States.

Edit:

Just to clarify that this was posted as informational. I don’t consider that a private social network will be the answer to “protect” the world of another private social network. And consider that there’s already Mastodon, I don’t understand why are we supposed to need another platform.

The new platform, W, will require identification and photo validation to ensure that its users are both humans and who they claim to be

Worthless garbage. Dont even upvote this shit. Let it die in obscurity.

W’s data will be hosted decentrally in Europe by European companies, and the platform will adhere to strict EU data protection laws.

If it were actually decentral, they wouldnt be able to enforce verification. Best case its just gonna be corpo slop in the style of bluesky without public federation.

Yeah, that'll work great.

You know that Mastodon is right there and work really well.

The W stands for “[W]e trade with genocidal apartheid states and flout international laws agreed upon since the 1940s so we can have the best comforts possible”.
