So glad to have encountered this community. So much to explore. I love people's recommendations of obscure lesser-known music.

Here's mine: soffmi muhod.

Currently playing semble^1^, as I do a lot.

I keep saying I'm soffmi muhod's biggest fan. I've not had anyone attempt to challenge me on that yet. ... I may be soffmi muhod's only fan. That obscure enough?

Something like 20 albums [(and over 20 hours to listen to)] (at least on bandcamp) over the past 20 years or so. And as far as I know, only 1 fan.

I find it really difficult to describe, even to put into some genre category. "Audio art", it says. "Ambient", it says. "Experimental", it says. "Zonk"(?), it says. It even says Boards of Canada is its mother, and Autechre is its father, and that it is a "child of music". As someone put it "a union with a tone generator [and something ~ I forget what]".

Is this obscure enough for this "Obscure Music" community? :)

Surely.

It's the most obscure I know.

^1^ After semble, I'm hard pressed to pick a fave album (except not the first and last, the weakest). ... [Backspaced over a start of an attempt to describe some highlights, like everon, ripoonjadi, pHphimorphia, the enthusiast, both the "sides", lojg mucg, jymg kega, counterpart, mq7, opsyem, Qavykr, qysqam, uwkivj mkiriac, and "the orange album", because then I realise that's nearly all of them]

Yeah, that certainly seems obscure! Listening now!

Yeah, that’s a weird form of ambient. Zonk seems as good a description as any. Not quite tone generator but close. Thanks for sharing!

Also crazy that you can barely even google it. Obscure is you!

Zonk seems as good a description as any.

Glad.

[Edit: Adding "Zonk" to post title.]

' just dont get that from music, from sound therapy, from anything else... nearest i can think of is autechre & the washing machine^1^ ^2^. XD at least for the 3rd track, hadarize, once primed for it by the prior 2 tracks.

I happen to be listening to soffmi muhod on shuffle when seeing this again...

currently on postmkiriac003 (last track of "All Sides. Especially The Sides You Can't See. "), and it's another of those corners of soffmi muhod that I often fall into overlooking for a while, but when listening, it's really quite something. Ineffable silky headspace. Trippy drone. "Zonk".

Like I'm taken somewhere not just otherworldly, but some other alien realm, something not quite machine-like, not quite scan-like, but the energy waves swirling, dancing, reverberating, doing something to my (in that place) non-physical ~~body~~ being. Like I'm in the "belly" or "mouth" of some vast being of some unfamiliar dimensional configuration, as it heals and reforms me.

... just moved on to hwoan (from Qavykr (which when it was the newest soffmi muhod album, it was my fave for a while, and often again after (~ it was originally two albums, that got mashed together, and tightened up (I forget their names, but iirc Qavykr's a mash of both their names...)))), and likewise, taken to some other realm alien to me... something more machine and insect(ish) like about it.

... and then truth needs no agent (from bep another corner of soffmi muhod I neglect, and forget how good it is))... and there are interesting layers to this one... like the scattered phases of the program being run on me, and the sound of a technician nearby, who then leaves the room, to leave the machine doing whatever it's doing to me... ... and eventually, it's almost like the machine gets stuck... and then evolves... like the machine is conscious and breaks its programming, and decides to do something more kind to me... like it's healing what the previous portion of the program was doing, and starts sending me somewhere else... like there was some inbuilt better karma afoot.

... and then to sominer (from jymg kega (which I waver on, likewise sometimes getting neglected and forgotten how great it is))... again, it's nearly all like being taken to some other strangely configured realm, where this time there's some kind of rotational spiralling alien squid-whale-snail machine I'm in, as part of its fluid-plasma continuum existence of.

... Okay, I'll stop. n_n

Welcome to Obscure Music

Linked Communities

This is a community dedicated to sharing lesser-known music. Please try to submit and share lesser known music. I reserve the right to remove any music I feel is not obscure enough. Please don't take it personally if I do. It's just some people are sometimes not aware that a band or a project is bigger than they think.

Please try to format roughly like this:

Artist Name - Song Title [Genre] [Year]

Obscurity Guidelines:

  1. Any artist with more than one song with over 2 million listens or views on Spotify or Youtube is not considered obscure.
  2. Any sideproject of a popular band or musician or celebrity.
  3. Covers and Remixes of popular songs that violate rule (1) on their own. Covers of popular songs tend to attract more attention than the band might.

Please do not post any artist more than once a week.
