I agree with this, but not because I intend to boycott american products, i just dont think that consumers benefit when there are very few choices. Some people want only ONE BRAND of cornflakes, and I dont think it is right. This was my view long before Trump

Escaping the trap of US tech dependence isn't enough. Canada must ensure it doesn't create new dependencies in tech and all other products and services, especially if they come from countries with a dictatorial regime. Mr. Carney's recent trip to Asia where he visited China but not Japan and South Korea isn't too promising in that respect (but he had bilateral meetings with both governments back in the fall when they agreed to increase bilateral cooperations on security, defence, cyber, space and hybrid threats, and other things; so maybe I am mistaken in this point).

Canada must diversify its trade with democratic governments imo.

Yeah this is such a pipe dream after over a year of no movement, the first baby step is motivating citizens to voluntarily delete their "free" accounts on US services. Next good luck with corporate adoption, without hefty government subsidies they will never use Linux, LibreOffice, local hosting, or other alternatives. Since the government will not ban these platforms, the only way is to populate locally owned platforms which is ironic considering after so long lemmy is still fairly dead so again good luck.
