A friend made a mix-stick for this girl as a birthday present. He just didn't mix songs but whole albums. She enthusiastically thanked him for the USB stick not thinking about that what is on the stick might be more important.
I got a mix-stick from him as well. I still listen to those albums sometimes.
Not quite the same, but a recent idea that's been stuck in my craw is ordering a bunch of cheap credit card style mp3 players* and loading them up with local artist tracks to share with interested people. Maybe with some weird/fun stuff saved to memory if anyone connects it to a computer (though noted this would be a piss poor security practice)

You can mount and write to CDs like as easy as if it were a USB stick. The hardest part now is getting a CD drive.
