Dormice have returned to Essex and are now "thriving" after years without a single sighting, a charity said.

Essex Wildlife Trust, which runs nature reserves across the county, said it has seen an explosion of dormice nests this year after woodland work was carried out.

Dormice are found in Africa, Asia and Europe and are known for their long hibernation periods.
