Yeah, I'm American and yeah, I made myself mad and looked this up as a reminder. I guess I just didn't feel like having a good day today.

And yep, I have a job that gives us zero paid time off and literally won't ever give it to us unless the government forces them to. kiryu-slam

What's that? A recession is inevitable so I need to hug onto my job like my survival depends on it? Well shucks, I guess I'll just cope and seethe until I die, especially considering that contractors rarely can ever unionize.

China: we’re proud to be the most hardworking people in the world

Me: I just want two-day weekends and a few weeks of annual leave to relax

This is what happens when your country doesn’t have a history of trade union movements (and where the constitution declares strikes to be illegal). Meanwhile, Western neoliberal countries are actively trying to get rid of the social welfare that were hard fought and won by their labor movements in the previous century.

Canadians, smugly: See how much better we are than the states?

Ok, Quebec deserves a little smugness. I envy the shit out of them for hydro-quebec and Montreal.

Quebec takes more than its due share of smugness

yeonmi-park In capitalist America, workers are so brutalized that they are guaranteed no vacation days

yeonmi-park "In capitalist America, the average worker is given no paid time off and expected to work until they burnout. Then, they can be let go for "poor performance" or for literally no stated reason at all and quickly replaced with the large unemployed labor pool. The burned out worker goes back to the reserve army of labor with little to no unemployment benefits that last up to 3 months, but typically take 6 months or longer to find another job, and so must either scrap by on local and international donations, a pittance of a savings that is lucky to pay 2 months rent, or most likely take multiple gig jobs where they run what little transportation they can afford in their car dependent labyrinth and even their bodies into the ground in a country where healthcare is seen as a luxury for the wealthy. Those that can not survive the frequent unemployment periods seriously risk becoming evicted from their dingy rentals and ultimately homeless due to lack of safety nets in American society. It is not uncommon for someone to go from full-time employment to homeless in under a year in the USA, especially during regular recessions.

Should've been born a rich, white, male* landowner. 🤷

I still remember when the best job I ever had changed their vacation policy

Took our sick days and vacations and rolled them into a single pool

Told us it was for our benefit because of """flexibility"""

Some absolute bullshit
