VERTICAL STAND SOLD SEPARATELY

That's kinda lame. The original one came with that. They wanna charge you extra for a plastic circle (and maybe the screw)? They're already reducing the amount of plastic needed by reducing the size of the console. Pass that savings onto the customer and give us the fucking plastic circle!

I first, I thought this was consolidating the line to a single SKU, and letting you add the drive yourself for a small premium. Instead, this looks like this is a new model with a reworking interior to save a bit on cost, and heat/power.

The one good thing, is that now every PS5 is a "Physical Edition." It is also way more likely in the decades to come you can get a 3rd party drive, and hack it to work. Without the size or soldiering being an issue, it is more likely we can see 3rd party replacements.

This is just a first step into finally getting rid of physical media.

It makes the digital-only version more attractive: it’s cheaper and you don’t really risk not having a drive as you can always add it later if you really need it.

Lots of people will get the cheaper version and never get the drive. Then in a year or two they will quietly stop selling the drive due to low demand. For PS6, they will leave out the optical drive because the majority of PS5 owners didn’t have an optical drive anyway.

It’s also low-risk for Sony, they now get a good picture of the demand for physical media, if they miscalculated they can just keep selling the drive.

That’s what I thought too. If I was getting one now id be inclined to get the digital plus add on drive so the drive is more replaceable.

I was trying to wait for the slim but got an og a few months ago during a really good sale. I’m not too bummed about it as I thought it’d be slimmer.

I’m surprised people sound even remotely surprised it’s just a size reduction.

PSOne

PS2 Slim

PS3 Slim

PS3 Super Slim

PS4 Slim

Kinda part of the parcel with Sony at this stage.

Looks like they're trying to make the disc version ugly, so people will go for digital

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My thoughts exactly... seems like it has a tumor lol...

Well, let's hope it heals when they, eventually release the pro edition.

I never even thought of this but I think your are right. I want a PS5 but I will not buy it because it is so ridiculously big and ugly.

Minimum effort law if you ask me.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I feel like this looks worse than the original model. Sure, it's thinner, but it looks like a 2000s-era AlienWare design.

Not including a vertical stand is an odd choice, as well. I get that console hardware is typically a loss-leader in general, but not including something so basic that only costs $30 just seems like unnecessary nickle-and-diming.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Was the original not also an Alienware kinda design?

As shallow as it is, that’s one of the reasons I’ve been waiting for a refresh to buy one. I thought the OG was gaudy and trying too hard to look “futuristic” for me to want to have it next to my TV. Seems the slim carries on the tradition unfortunately…

The digital version looks sleek when vertical. Too bad that Sony's choosing to include the horizontal stand in the box instead.

The console clearly wasn't designed for horizontal use.

So only a different form but no upgrades?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

None in terms of extra power, but from what I read there was a die shrink so the console should use less electricity and run cooler.

The SSD also goes from 825GB to 1TB

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I forgot they weren’t 1TB from the gate. That was an odd choice

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The odd choice was not enabling the m.2 from launch. I'm not sure building to a price is odd given VERY few gen 4 drives were around at the time and the memory prices were INSANE at that time.

Kind of amazing they have gone from circa £140 to £35 for 1tb in less than 3 years.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

might get one if they come out with hackable firmware

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Your best bet would be buying on as soon as it launches and just never connecting it to the internet

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

yeah thats what i did with the ps4 pro, i just hope this one doesnt sound like a jet engine

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

The design is still horrendous. I was hoping for a total do over.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Oh, great, and I was just about to buy one soon. Whatever, not worth waiting for these models to become widely available!
