I've seen firsthand how large American tech corporations abuse the H1B visa. I'm not terribly mad at this, at least at surface level.

I say this understanding my perspective is inevitably biased, as a worker of an industry being rapidly displaced by outsourced labor.

Aren't there a lot of foreign teachers and nurses? Two career paths that are currently seeing record low interest from citizens?

It's gonna suck for education and healthcare.

I can not claim to know the ins and outs of that. But judging by the state of education and healthcare in America, it still seems like exploitation.

Yeah I know someone who worked for a non-profit that helped H1B visa holders who needed an escape route from silicon valley jobs. They said companies would saddle them with doing shitty things that the engineers as a whole were generally resistant to. H1B holders are easier for companies to pressure because they have to leave the country if they quit and can’t find another company who will both hire them (with a job posting that’s compliant with the “demonstrate need to look outside the US” component) and deal with the visa paperwork administratively.

I don’t know anything about the medical and other folks here on the same visa though. I know my brother’s brain surgeon is on one.

You know this administration will just grant waivers to those who provide a bribe, right?

The bribe would have to be of more material value than the actual cost, such as saying x thing. 🤔

I can’t say that this is the perfect move, but it’s certainly better than nothing.
