So IDF suffered from PTSD while Palestinians suffered from death. Who am I supposed to feel bad for?
Like Frankie Boyle said about the US: "Not only will America go to your country and kill all your people, they'll come back twenty years later and make a movie about how killing your people made their soldiers feel sad."
Conflicted IDF soldiers can always frag their officers and desert. Otherwise, they can have what sympathy I have left for them after thinking of the Palestinians.
Fuck 'em. If they're really against committing genocide then follow in Aaron Bushnell's footsteps. Otherwise, good riddance.
The Nuremberg trials established that "I was just following orders" does not excuse war crimes. Something for them to think about before they start shooting, maybe.
The Nuremberg trials prosecuted only 24 people, all of whom were very high level Nazis. This number goes up to around 1700 if you count the subsequent tribunals also held at Nuremberg.
To a first approximation, the treatment of the rank and file was a polite agreement to politely ignore their involvement and move on.
We tried the collective punishment thing after world war 1 with the treaty of Versailles. The impact of that is still a subject of debate, but some historians draw a direct line from it to the Nazis.
I don't give a damn. The people i am ferling sorry about are palestinians

No one cares
They‘re not alone! Many grandpas who hardly ever talked were a common thing in Germany.
Theyd rather commit suicide instead of trying to use their armaments to fix their leaders head in a blaze of glory? I was going to say we were losing the only ones with hearts in there but its more likely they are just stupid..
Stupid? Now that's not fair! Sure, some of them must be idiots, but what you're failing to see is that even more of them, maybe even most of them, are also complete and utter fucking cowards. The kind that realize they could do just as you've proposed but chose to keep their tails between their legs and let this murder machine continue razing women, men, and children alike.
spoiler
Seriously though, I am sure some of them were stupid or foolish enough to believe, at first, that what they were doing was not as bad as it so obviously is from the outside. Propaganda works and, while individuals may be immune to some forms of it, no person is immune to the entire concept. Given the right circumstances on the right day, any person who has ever lived could be pushed to do things they think unimaginable of themselves. For worse and for better, all the same. I'm not saying we should feel bad for these people, because I do not think we should. But we absolutely need to understand that there is a system in place that is intent on obscuring one's ability to reason and understand, just as well as it convinces them that what they're signing up for has nothing to do with what they are actually signing up for. Many of these schmucks were definitely tricked into this, as is always the case with operations of this sort. Every nazi is still a dirty fucking nazi and I refuse to aim my sympathy their way, but it is vital to remember that some choose it because of the hate in their hearts, while others choose it because they were taught to not realize they had a choice at all. That difference matters if our goal is to actually change this world for the better, rather than just signal that we want people to think we want that change.

Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
