Almost three years between seasons, I suppose these really are just really long films now.
Yeah they need a new term for these so people know wether or not they want to get invested because it's just not for some people.
It's not a show with "seasons" because season implies annually.
Yet they are not mini series either since they do multiple releases
And they aren't movies since they are broken up into episodes
If there is more than a two year wait between releases I think we need a new term for it.
I agree, the closest thing I can liken it to is to refer to them as additional entries to an anthology; but even then it’s not quite correct/succinct enough.
Anthology implies that the episodes/seasons are independent. That works for stuff like Black Mirror which had a gap of four years, but it doesn't work for story driven shows. I suppose the term "series" could work, it's already used by some shows like Doctor Who, but that term does double duty as it's also used to talk about shows in general. Installment could also work.
Similar performance to season one? Not growth? Well now Netflix is gonna have to cancel it.

Personally, I'm getting a bit tired of the way Netflix is releasing their shows. Long stretches between seasons, and then they don't release all the episodes at once. Isn't this one of the shows where they're releasing the season in batches in the USA?
I appreciated the first season for what it was, but not a super fan so to speak. My family on the other hand, was super excited to see the new season launch, until we noticed there's only a limited number of episodes. We literally just got burned with that with Sandman, so I guess we should have known better.
So anyway, I guess we won't be adding to those viewing numbers until sometime September, and now we've got a sour taste in our mouths with regards to Netflix.
They’re releasing the next batch in the same time as if they were releasing them weekly.
You can not like that, that’s totally fine. I do think it’s better for overall mindshare. When they release all the episodes, then those that are interested binge watch and then don’t discuss it after like two weeks.
I think the split release is an ok compromise.
Is the purpose of this to try and maximize Netflix's profits by word of mouth marketing in the hope of not having a show cancelled?
If you don’t watch when everyone is talking about the show then it becomes another show on the list so you’ll get around to it sometime, maybe. But if someone says there’s more episodes coming up then you might be more likely to watch it before the second batch comes out.
As much as I prefer to binge watch shows, it does tamp down the water cooler talk.
Yep exactly my thoughts : "ho part 2 comes as if part 1 is supposed to be watched one episode per week". Really feel with their new tendency to release only part they are starting to understand that releasing a new show / season all at once makes for a poorer experience. (And maybe it avoids people subscribing for one month only when there is a new release)
Too bad they don't go all the way and truely release weekly. It won't feel like season has been chopped and that you need to wait to watch the end.
Sure it is nice to binged watch it but it's more appropriate for shows already aired. For new show / season, IMO, it makes it more difficult to speak about episodes with others and to imagine what it's going to happen next. Prime, Apple, Disney, ... understand it.

Sour taste? Good to see you don’t have any real problems. Expect this more. As streaming looks to advertising to make a profit, platforms will want to own the conversation with a show for more than a week per season. It’s also preferred by most creatives, and allows for real-world conversation with everyone synced in more manageable chunks.
