Fontforge and inkscape? I've never gone deep in to it before, but an inkscape wiki page does reference export to font forge as an svg
So, this is out of my element. But does Inkscape work for you?
I found this page where some people are talking about it.
I was looking for a program to design and not use fonts. Does it allow desinging new ones?
It's been a long time since I made a typeface but most typeface apps are better at compiling then than designing them. You typically design them somewhere else, like Illustrator or InkScape.

Maybe 10 years ago I tried designing a font in Inkscape. It was possible but more of a gimmick. I then installed Fontforge and very quickly decided I wasn't going to learn how to use it, didn't have the bandwidth. But the tools are there. Both methods have a learning curve but I think have enough instruction resources online.
