I'm pretty open, and not really looking for anything specific here aside from the usual "no liberal bullshit" rule. I did listen to a bit of Chapo for a hot second in 2018 but I could be persuaded to go back if theyre good.

So to that end, what are your favorite episodes of your podcast of choice?

Seconding Blowback, definitely quantity over quality with this one. Season 3 really blew my mind when I finally learned how awful the Korean War was. They deem it to be less of a war and more of a genocide, it really put into perspective why the DPRK is so bent on defense and isolation.

Revolutionary Left Radio is also great, my favorite episode being on The Battle of Blair Mountain.

It's patreon only, but I have really liked Radio Free Amanda when I was subbed.

The movements: a podcast history for the masses is updated very infrequently but is amazing. The host is like if Dan Carlin waa a commie and he covers Latin American communism in greater depth than anyone else i've encountered. He's got an 8 part series on the Russian revolution that's effectively an audiobook

The Dig is good, guests typically get deep into a topic. Leans demsoc I guess but it’s not arguing for any particular leftist strain, just getting into the subject at hand.

I listen to a lot of podcasts, but here's a few from recent listening:

Blowback - might be the greatest podcast I ever listened to. All episodes and all seasons are good.

Tech Won't Save Us - the idea is in the name, great debunking of tech bro hype. Episode about AI as the stochastic parrot is very good.

Maintenance Phase - a lib podcast about diet culture with deep dives about all the big grifters like J.Peterson. One that imo all on the left who care about body shaming should listen to. Episodes about Peterson are for example great.

The Death Panel - all the covid episodes

Upstream - many great episodes like trans liberation, Laziness does not exist feat. Devon Prince and many others.

Then I also like to listen to Michael Parentis speeches as "podcasts", recommend those too.

Marxist Podcasts:

  • Antifada -- The most Chapo-y of the podcasts I listen to but actually communist and much more rigorous. The host and Matt Christman have (or had I guess) a series on it called History is a Weapon which is quite good too.
  • The Regrettable Century -- Religion and History focused podcast, especially Medieval and 19th century German history but explicitly through a Marxist lens.
  • Varn Vlog -- probably the most prolific Marxist podcaster right now, he interviews everyone (of the socialist left) so even if you don't agree with him all the time his podcast a fantastic resource. His youtube channel has more than his podcast feed and is updated faster for whatever reason.

Non-marxist Podcasts:

  • Bad Gays -- A left adjacent podcast about horrible queer people (mostly but not exclusively 'gay' men) throughout history. Their first episode is about Ernst Röhm, the main 'victim' of the Night of the Long Knives, the leader of the Brownshirts and personal friend of Hitler.
  • Fight Like An Animal -- A behavioral biology/political theory podcast, the host is more of an Anarchist but definitely revolutionary focused.
  • People's History of Ideas -- Ostensibly about the history of different communist revolutions but is primarily about the Chinese Revolution so far. It's like Revolutions but better. I put it under non-marxist cus the host is not explicit about being one but probably is.

  • Soy Trek—deep dives into Star Trek with relentless inappropriate jokes

  • We're Not So Different—solid and entertaining historical materialism podcast mostly focusing on medieval Europe

  • Last Born in the Wilderness—deep dive interviews hosted by a hexbear user

  • Geopolitical Economy Report—good anti-imperialist news, features economics reports based on de-dollarization with Michael Hudson and Radhika Desai every couple of weeks

  • Anti-Imperialist Archive—extremely depressing audio documentaries about all kinds of fucked up shit

  • It's Not Just In Your Head—good leftwing mental health podcast but sometimes gets annoying in that Big Dick Wolff's wife Harriet Fraad has little if anything positive to say about AES. She does however have many fascinating stories and insights and is otherwise solid (as are the other hosts).

  • Unequal Exchange Podcast—good interviews with many comrades from global south countries. Most recent was a good interview with a dude from Niger.

  • Radio War Nerd—so many deep dives into history and current events but seemingly growing more lib by the second. The podcast has never recovered since the Ukraine War officially started.

  • If Books Could Kill—good but lib podcast about bad books

  • I Don't Even Own A Television—sadly defunct but excellent and hilarious left podcast about bad books

  • The Dollop—pretty famous demsoc podcast where comedians riff on history.

  • The Anti-Empire Project With Justin Podur—really one of the best on this list, many amazing deep dives into global south history and current events.

  • Auxiliary Statements—decent, lesser-known podcast on left theory

  • The East Is A Podcast—one of my favorites, taught me so much about orientalism, but is mostly paywalled now. Still has many, many great episodes in the catalogue.

  • Marx Madness—reading theory with comrades

  • Horror Vanguard—good left podcast about horror films

I listen to a lot of podcasts.

Fraad has little if anything positive to say about AES.

What's AES?

Also, is radio war nerd pay only?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

AES refers to "actually existing socialism" and usually refers to countries that have communist parties in power, like China, Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, and the DPRK

Citations Needed and that's it unless you count comedy podcasts like E1

Swampside Chats. Their bio:

"This is Swampside Chats. The podcast where communists shoot the shit about current events, history, political economy, and theory."

Some of it, much of it, goes over my head, but they're still entertaining to listen to as they discuss books. It's mostly books these days.
