Weather dotcom has premium gatekeeping and Accuweather just kinda sucks

EDIT: i just remembered not everyone is ND and doesn't get really super into every topic enough to care about things like meteorology :[

Check if your country has a national weather service and use their direct website.

I go to the source for Australia. The Bureau of Meteorology

I mostly just look at the rain radar. Forecasts are little more than divination.

Breezy Weather on my phone and Weather Underground on PC.

Breezy is also in FDroid, but that package only uses Open Meteo for the weather data (not super accurate in my area). The "standard" release on Github allows others (AccuWeather, NWS, Open-Meteo, OpenWeather, and some others). I use AccuWeather since it's more accurate that OpenMeteo. I just don't like AccuWeather's app / ads.

that's cool. yea i was hoping for something like that. i guess it's hard to avoid commodification of meteorological reports since they rely on a bunch of individual stations sharing data... so once that gets snatched up by some capitalist power what are you gonna do, go make your own weather station?

or maybe not, i have literally no idea how this works. i assume people only know things by asking the local places. i guess they can tell me the weather on antarctica or the moon with a good enough satellite. (uh, well i guess that'd just be "cold," and "none")

Most of the weather stations in the US are operated by (or at least report to) NWS. AccuWeather et al just package that data and slap ads in their apps.

There are a lot of hobbyist stations connected to Weather Underground. I have one! I got it more because we are in kind of a microclimate area slightly different than the city's main station. And also we are prone to hurricanes and other windy conditions, so I just wanna track the wind outside to know if I have to run out and secure loose items.

With the Weather Underground widget, I can have my station data right on my phone. Forecasts still go by the main city.

Fun fact, the mast for the old DirectTv dish was the perfect size for the weather station, and gave me an excuse to climb up and take the dish down finally.

Any port in a storm.

weather.gov (for the US)

Doesn’t have an app that I know of so I use my phone’s browser

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

hey that seems like a pretty straightforward option

wonder why it's not more popular

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

adding on to grue’s comment; john oliver put out a good episode that will shed some light on why:

wonder why it’s not more popular

Because AccuWeather's lobbying efforts have resulted in NOAA being prohibited from competing with "value-added" private-sector weather services.

I have my city bookmarked there, and the radar. Plus they have the best warnings. Not to mention that other sites use their data as well.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

My guess is because it's not a company. NOAA didn't have to make money because it's government.

Windy.com is fun to play with.

Android there's Flowx, Raindar II for basic but quick local radar, and Breezy Weather for a more traditional but open source option.

Official government weather service: https://www.meteoswiss.admin.ch/

The app used to be amazing, but it got ruined by a recent UI redesign and is now quite tedious to use ... the weather data is still great at least.

Badenweiler Wetterstation.

I know, it's a bit niche 😄.

Meteociel for France, its got a bunch of models available

  • GFS EUROPE
  • ECMWF
  • UKMO
  • NOGAPS
  • JMA
  • GEM
  • UKMO

For thunder specifically I check https://map.blitzortung.org/

If I'm lazy abd just want to quickly check a cool looking map : https://www.windy.com/ but it's bloated like hell

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I use an app called windy and an open source weather app called weather forecast USA

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I use the met office but they only do detailed coverage for the UK, they've still got other coverage outside the UK but it's not as detailed

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

I just ask ChatGPT. Now that NOAA has been gutted I figure it can guess as good as anyone.

Of course /s... relax

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

I still get good NOAA reports on HAM radio. Although it did go down for a few days recently for "upgrades" they said.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Plus with the energy usage of OpenAI etc, the LLMs can just say "tomorrow will be warmer" and only get more accurate every time! :)

(I hope my joke about climate doom and gloom carried across the internet okay! ♥️)

The default weather app on my phone. Or by just going outside. I only care to know if I should wear shorts, long pants, or a jacket depending on the temperature/if it is or may rain.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

yea? i LOVE maps. i was hoping to just sit here and look at radars for the evening

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

OP, you and I might make good friends. I was a weather forecaster for a little while and then got a degree in GIS (fancy cartography). I LOVE maps and I LOVE weather.

This website has always been one of my favorites. Check out the weather data-> satellite options.

I just assume it's good biking weather and am dismayed and late when it's not.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

I use the Bura app, which uses open-meteo.com as a source :)

It seems as accurate as others and is open-source, so from my quick look, no nagging or creepy tracking. :)

Whoa, that looks like one hell of an app.

Given the depth of information covered there is a steep learning curve if you seek to use the program in it's entirety, help information is available and touched on below.

How well versed are you in meteorology? I'm a layman but I'm definitely interested in it enough that I'd prefer to get my reports from something other than "the weather rock" 🤣

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

I'm a geologist. I took a meteorology class for funsies back at university.

It's also my responsibility to ensure the drill crew's safety. If a lightning storm is rolling in, we need to drop the mast on the drill rig so it's not the tallest metal object around. 💀

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I use Weather Alert. It's free, no ads, has a nice radar and good hourly, daily and week forecasts. Plus dependable severe weather alerts.
