You should have seen how defeated and confounded my DM was when it happened. Especially since I rolled before he could object, and I rolled high (I think it was an 18 or something, where he would've had trouble saying I failed something simple like rolling to punt a cat).

The whole table was in an uproar too, so he had no choice but to acquiesce. I swear I see that thousand-yard stare in his eyes every time the story comes up. XD

Now see this is my pet peeve, how can you roll high before the DM can object? You shouldn't be rolling before the DM calls for a roll.

If DM'ing, I wouldn't have even called for one. I'd just have said you successfully punt the cat and everyone hears it scream in agony. Good luck talking your way out and staying at the party. 🤷

With fast hands.

If a cat screams in the hedge maze and no one is around to see my foot connect with its little furry torso... who's to say I was the culprit? Perhaps it was harassed by some vengeful hawk or raven. Look at my beady little rat eyes. Would they lie???

Fast hands don't mean anything if the DM says to reroll cause the first didn't count due to being rolled without being called for.

Now the little detail that the garden has a hedgemaze and you weren't directly attending the dinner party changes things. Guess you kick a cat. So that happened... Anyways.

I know you kid, but rolling without the DM asking you to is a dick move and a faux pas at a table. You really shouldn't do that. Same thing happened with Critical Role and the "roll for scry" moment. It puts the DM in a position where they might have to confront you, deny you the roll and sour a moment. It puts pressure on them to allow you to do something, which players often abuse - someone spins a tale of doing a quadruple backflip, landing on someone's head, attacking and bumping the dude into lava, rolls before the DM can say "there is no lava nearby but..." and puts them in a really awkward situation, especially with high rolls.

* cat bites back *
* rolls 20 again *

Is this related to the 'Kurt Zouma kicking the cat' controvery and the follow ups?

No clue what that is, this is a story that happened at my table (it was me, I punted the cat over a noble's hedge maze)

He is a footballer (Soccer, my fellow Americans). There was a controversy a while back due to a video showing him kicking his cat. Escalated pretty quickly and animal welfare groups intervened and removed the cat from his custody. He had to pay some fine also IIRC.

Because they were RPing a ratman, keep up

[-] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

I remember him from portal. He didn't seem like a cat kicker

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

yeah, he seems more like a cube kisser

Ok i know much less about D&D then i thought. I've read a lot of stories and all that but never came across this. is it just some little chaos gremlin?

A bit, you might say. Since rats and cats don't get along, I had it in mind that I was going to have a little fun being afraid and/or malicious towards any cats or cat-like creatures during the dinner party, especially since we were just doing a one-shot and I wasn't going to get another chance. About halfway through the adventure, I realized that there probably wasn't going to be an organic opportunity, so while we were out in the gardens, plotting our next move to steal the expensive painting, with few NPC party guests around, I decided I would... prod the DM a little to give me an opportunity.

For the most part I was a good player during the adventure! I had my mannerisms down, obsessively 'preening' my 'whiskers' (read: facial hair), twitchy-but-social and generally non-malicious, generally inclined towards subterfuge and flattery over violence. Everyone agreed, DM included, that I made a great ratman.

But I CRAVED an opportunity to be a little ratty towards a little catty!
