In the US, it's still in theaters and is now pay-per-view on several streaming services.

IIRC we mentioned it in this community a couple months ago when the trailer came out.

Very good. Great commentary on imperialism, and the whitewashing of oppressed cultures. The vampires acquiring music from the groups they subjugate (Irish then African American) is such an interesting detail to dive into. The dance/party scene that explores the full history of African American music and subsequently the African diaspora was so well done. Sound track is great. Special effects were good. Not sure there was a single moment where I felt my immersion was ruined by a janky effect, particularly with all the compositing they had to do to duplicate Michael B. Jordan. I actually quite like it didn’t turn into just full on action movie in the second half because I don’t think it’s supposed to be an action movie. I feel the movie shines in the slower moments, particularly when whole songs are given time to breathe and play in full.

7/10? Maybe 8/10?

Some good points there. I bet there'll be some quality scholarly essays written about the imperialism aspect.

A friend of mine wrote about black horror for uni. They submitted right before the movie came out and were very bummed they didn’t get to include it in the final piece.

Overhyped. Nothing happens for an hour then then the second half is totally predictable. Maybe half a dozen good scenes make it just about watchable. 6/10

Best vampire movie I've ever seen. No direct references to Dracula, it builds a mythos based on the 1930s Mississippi Delta, specifically jukes and the delta blues. You don't have to know anything about that tho, the first half of the movie sets the scene and makes the appearance of the vampires seem inevitable. There's an important mid-credits scene and a less consequential end-credit scene.

I caught it at my cousin's place yesterday, since theaters are way too expensive these days. If you're into vampire movies, it's definitely worth watching at some point, especially as it hits more streaming services and the price comes down.

I think the weakest part of the movie was the latter half, everything felt so rush, like they wanted to have action scenes, but didn't have time to make it very interesting. Aside from that, the movie was very fun and unique. The music was absolutely amazing.

Yeah that's a good point, there definitely was a first half vs second half. And the action wasn't really "Marvel style". But Coogler and Jordan know how to make Marvel-style movies and I don't think that was the goal here. When I watch it again I'm gonna look more closely at the action.

i would describe the action as kinda a time sink i guess. Hateful 8 is a movie that i think is somewhat similar to Sinners in the sense there's an intense build up and action at the end. What felt better at the end of that movie is that the action was just a way to resolve things and was therefore quick and to the point. In sinners, it felt like it dragged on, while not being all that interesting to watch. I was more excited to see what would be the result of the action, who dies and who lives etc.

Hateful 8

That's a great comparison. Another point of reference is John Carpenter's "The Thing" -- there's a scene in Sinners that echoes it. (at least I think so... when I saw The Thing as a kid it freaked me out so much I haven't been able to watch it again.)

Yes, it's outstanding and absurdly fun!

Movie of the year so far

Not yet, but it's on my watchlist, the trailer looked good.

Yeah it was pretty good. Think it could have been a bit tighter narratively but thematically interesting. Def worth a watch

it could have been a bit tighter narratively

Admittedly that's subjective, but personally I thought the story and pacing were near-perfect. When I saw the previews I was wondering if it'd just be two movies poorly grafted together, but no, ultimately it all fit together really well. I'm still "processing" tho, might need to see it again to really think about it.

"Few creatures of the night have captured our imagination like vampires.
What explains our enduring fascination with vampires? Is it the overtones of sexual lust, power, control? Or is it a fascination with the immortality of the undead?"

Feel free to post any vampire-related content here. I'll be posting various vampire media I enjoy just as a way of kickstarting this community but don't let that stop you from posting something else. I just wanted a place to discuss vampire movies, books, games, etc.
