I tried yesterday to use the 8bitdo ultimate controller without updating and it didn't work, so I was kinda bummed. The switch 2 could 'see' the controller and registred it as a pro controller, so it was weird the buttons didn't do anything.

Will try this update now!

I'm curious if there's an ability to wake up the switch 2. I believe it was possible on the switch 1. My switch 1 pro controller doesn't wake up my switch 2 (or maybe I'm doing something wrong), which bothers me.

Looks like the updater is Windows-only, and does not work in Wine. Is there another way to just flash the firmware file from Linux?

Try a Windows VM with USB pass though if there is no Linux tool.

Does fwupd auto-pull the firmware for it in KDE?

Sweet. I already have 2 Ultimate 2C controllers. Way back I bought a Switch Pro controller and I'm never buying official gamepads again. Third party stuff are great now

Can the Pro 2 turn the console on? My original switch pro controller can't, unfortunately.

Anecdotally and semi-relevantly, the Ultimate 2 doesn't wake the console. 🙁

Nice, I love my Ultimate and I'm glad it will also be usable if/when I get a Switch 2.

The company said more updates are coming soon.

Also nice to hear. Hope the Micro gets an update, I often use it for "low interaction" games like VNs and it's also good for small kids, my nieces really like it.

I'm team SN30 pro, and I'm glad it's on the list too.

I think we discussed this before, but how's micro in actual use?

It's kind of terrible as an actual controller, but lowkey a fantastic fidget toy.

I bought it for the novelty and it was worth it.

lol at lowkey fidget toy.

I plan to get Ultimate 2, so may as well get micro with it as well.

It's not a comfortable controller for adults, but it's a complete controller with all buttons that is very small.

It's good for young kids or if you want something small you can carry around for quick sessions on the go - I used it several times to play simple games like Vampire Survivors while cycling on the gym.

I also use it for VNs at home - in those games you're very often just pressing a button to move the text forward, so I hold with the buttons facing up, kinda like a small TV remote.

Ah okay, thanks for the info.

IMO the SN/SF30 series is great if you want compact and still good for actual gameplay.

Though you have to be able to grip it the old Super NES way, from the sides, held by fingers and with thumbs testing diagonally on the buttons. I discovered some people didn't like it but they were mostly holding it weird. Like cradling it uncomfortably in their palms with thumbs coming from the bottom...

I may get Ultimate 2, instead of Nintendo Switch Pro 2 Controller. Ultimate 2 has TMR sticks, which are supposedly better than Hall-effect (or newer tech than hall-effect, something like that).

Edit: Noticed that there's 8bitdo Pro 2 too, so clarified that I am talking about the official Nintendo Switch Pro 2 Controller.

TMR sticks, from what I understand, have the hardiness of the Hall-effect sticks but use less power.

Yes, I've had someone mod my Pro Controller with Hall Effect sticks after it started drifting, and it's noticeable that the battery lasts less now.

Of course, it still lasts a LONG time.

I love my Pro2 controller. It works great on the Steam Deck and Switch. I just wish you could program the back paddles to keyboard keys or mouse buttons.

I won't be getting a Switch 2, but it's really cool they're doing a firmware update instead of needing a new controller.

Thank goodness, I’m a big fan of my classic Game Boy themed SN30 and was a bit annoyed to find it didn’t work at launch with the 2.

I think I’ll definitely be picking up an Ultimate 2 in a few months to replace my aging Switch Pro controller.
