The thing I liked the most about Lemm.ee was that there was a general policy against defederating. It let me drink directly from the whole lemmy firehose if I wanted. If I wanted to block individual communities or users, that was within my personal power and nobody decided to step in my way and decide for me.

It looks like you've defederated from 4 instances so far, so... that's pretty good. threads dot net by user vote, and three others for being virulent hives of pedo shit.

... you know what. i think i might be cool with this. I'll watch for a bit.

What was the thing for UK users with lemmy.zip? I know I read it somewhere and forgot

[-] [email protected] 3 points 16 hours ago

I believe the issue was that the UK seemingly wants sites to block people under 18 from seeing porn by collecting IDs from everyone. Rather than police the ages of its users or remove all adult content from the instance the .zip admin decided to just block everyone from the UK to forestall any legal issues that might arise.

Yeah spot on, it's complicated by me being a UK resident and also the owner, and so the only way to protect the site without introducing age verification and AI monitoring (which are dystopian measures, not to mention incredibly expensive) without changing aspects of the site, is to just not provide a service to the UK users.

If I wasn't in the UK, I'd just ignore this act like every other admin and service does.

As a Brit, I don't blame you at all.

Know of any instances outside the UK with a similar federation policy?

How can I migrate my account over to a new instance?

[-] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

Go to your settings, export your settings, then import them on the new account.

Ah you mean your saved posts? You will not lose that. You can download the file and see what is in there.

The file basically have: profile settings, followed_communities, saved_posts, saved_comments, blocked_communities, blocked_users, blocked_instances

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

What saves?

You will lose your post history

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

You can save posts and comments. Not sure how other apps do it since I mostly use Voyager but it's pretty obvious in that app.

Sounds like they do save which is pretty cool. Will be sad to lose my post and comment history, but at least I have my saved posts and comments.

Yep, I've noticed later, I never used it so I didn't even remember it exists, but well, that you can send to your new account

I've used it a lot to save stuff I want to read or watch later, and then always forget about it lol.
