+1 this is the answer.
Yea, and it performs well.
I highly recommend playing the PSP version using the PPSSPP emulator and configuring this texture pack: https://forums.ppsspp.org/showthread.php?tid=29776%EF%BF%BC

Emulation
RetroArch can be installed directly from Steam store like any other game. It has even Cloud save for save files of games. I use the Beetle PSX core on it, which needs to be installed from within the application itself. Each core can emulator other systems. Now for some people RetroArch is complicated. So its up to you if you want to go that route.
As an alternative, there are emulators or suits of emulators that help with setting everything up. In example RetroDeck or EmuDeck. They need to be installed outside the Steam store, either as a script or as Flatpak I think. I don't use any of them, so cannot help further there.
I got RetroArch installed and FFT installed and working (had issues with the bios files, the extension was .BIN not .bin.
Very nice. Also thanks for reporting back. Yes, in Linux filenames and extensions are case sensitive, unlike in Windows. Most programs (including Windows itself) treat lowercase and uppercase in filenames as the same thing. And because most developers and users are on Windows, they are used to it this way. So on Linux we have to take extra care and in some cases rename files.
Next would be to learn how to swap a Disc when the game asks to. I mean for games that are multi-disc, in case you play other games too: https://docs.libretro.com/guides/disc-swapping/
And I also recommend the official forum of RetroArch too, to ask questions if you have any (I am there too ;-)): https://forums.libretro.com/ Because there are lot of engaged users who know RetroArch pretty good and even developers of RetroArch and some cores respond and help there too. Have fun with Final Fantasy Tactics (one of my alltime favorites). BTW the game was announced to have a remaster.
I'm playing it right now
no this is lemmy
From a lover of this game, (must have beat it 10 times), I actually think the android port it the best.
It's got enhanced sprites and animations. Even better than the psp port. It pressrves the PS1 audio which the psp version messed up. The touch controls are decent.
You should look into Romhacks of the original console games (especially PS1). There are some very interesting mods available: FFT (PSX) and FFTA (GBA) and FFT (PSP)
Now this involves patching original Roms with the Romhack mod files. I do most with Romhack Patcher JS directly in the browser (nothing is uploaded, its total offline and local application in browser).
Is the android version available on Steam Deck?
It's not, I just assume everyone already has an android device. It's let's you play from anywhere on your phone too, instead of having to lug the deck.
No android devices here. Strictly looking for something for my Steam Deck.
Emulation station app with psx emulators
Or GBA emulators for FFT:A.
That person tactics! This game was my gateway to the amazing world of SRPGs (灬º‿º灬)♡
Have you traveled into the realm of min/maxer paradise, Disgaea? I've been staying away recently, but I still get the itch every once in a while...
My giant Steam Backlog says it's still on my to play list. I'll look into it!
Emulate it
