Context: on September 11 1973, the democratically elected Chilean president Salvador Allende was overthrown by Pinochet.

For once, no, actually. The CIA tried to overthrow him a few years earlier and failed. Pinochet's coup caught the CIA by surprise, as Pinochet had... very effectively given the impression of being 'nonpolitical' and loyal to the government, to the point where Allende himself was shocked to hear of his involvement.

I would be curious on your sources...mine are Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine... Which I read years ago and maybe I'm blurring something but a quick Google search took me to the George Washington University website with this on it..https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/briefing-book/chile/2024-09-09/cia-chile-scandal-50

There the CIA is falsely denying spending money to attempt to destabilize Allende's administration. They absolutely tried. But as I noted

The CIA tried to overthrow him a few years earlier and failed.

Also context: spoilers for a certain character in Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Madoka for short), a highly recommended magical girl anime and must watch classic.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

Classic!?

Damn, I'm old.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Can you tell the spoiler? I wont watch that anime, but it would be interesting to know the full background of the meme.

The other 2 characters on the top image are Pim and Charlie from Smiling Friends

Magical girl who's power is to go back in time. Keeps going back in time to try and save one of her friends but each time reversal results in them being less close as friends. In the main timeline of the show they've basically become strangers.

Being meguca is suffering.

Time travel sucks. No accurate time travel story ends happily, even if the resolution overall is good. Looper is a great example of a good one. I think Primer too, but I still have trouble with it, even with all the aids and charts. Oh, and 12 Monkeys, an easier one to follow.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

Tbf the time travel is not the main story. Arguable whether the resolution is any good.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

who's power is to go back in time

Also stopping time. And hammerspace. Like, for storing whole aircraft carriers, if she felt like it. Also teleportation. Also creating projectiles out of thin air (but I think that goes for most magical girls in the series). Possibly also flight, or just jumping very high, but again that probably goes for all of them.

Minimal contextHer ability as a magical girl is to travel back in time. So yeah, the meme itself is a spoiler.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

huh, i've watched the first season but i still dont understand this... or maybe i forgot

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

There's only the one season, but the first two movies are remakes. The third movie is a sequel to either and there's a forth in production.

Do Chileans also use that horrendous month-day-year date format?

[-] [email protected] 20 points 3 days ago
[-] [email protected] 21 points 3 days ago

Like everyone who uses european calendar system except americans? Who would have guessed!

[-] [email protected] 27 points 3 days ago
[-] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

Yeah, Europeans trying to dunk on Americans for their date formatting is pretty funny when they're both absolute shit compared to ISO

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

Shittiness is relative, not absolute. The American system is shitty compared to the European one, and the latter is shitty compared to ISO.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

It really is no less shitty, you're just used to it

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Well, it is in a logical order. I call that less shitty.

[-] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

Being in a logical order doesn't make it less shitty. When else do numbers get ordered from small to large? Putting the numbers in alphabetical order is logical, too, but in an equally "less shitty" way.

The only ordering without a downside is large to small. Preferring "1st of June" to "June 1st" is all familiarity and that's fine. There's ways the American method is "better," too, but we'd be arguing about who stepped in less shit. So let us rid ourselves of these dirty shoes and bask in the perfection of the ISO 8601 date standard!

[-] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago

Eh, not everyone. The Japanese go year-month-day.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

So in everyday life they would say month-day?

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago
[-] [email protected] -1 points 2 days ago

It’s helicopter time

[-] [email protected] 21 points 3 days ago

what happened on the 9th of november?

[-] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago

In Germany, everything

[-] [email protected] 17 points 3 days ago

What could you even do on 9/11? Get up early to watch it all happen again? Better come on 8/11

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

Homura..? She'd have more than time enough to do whatever she damn well pleased.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 3 days ago

If you haven't read The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, put it on your list. Please and thank you.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

Damn, and here I was hoping she'd prevent the fall of Barcelona.

Oh, well. Chile is also fine, I guess.
