My favorite Codenames moment:
I have to get my wife to guess "Ray" and "Tube", so I give the perfect clue: "Cathode for two." You know, like a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) television, a phrase that I think a lot of people are familiar with and definitely the first thing I think of when I hear the word "Cathode".
Her sister, who is giving clues for the other team, nods and agrees with me that this is a perfect clue.
My wife is baffled. She starts talking to her sister's husband, the guesser for the other team. They talk about anodes, and things opening and closing, and then I realize my mistake: unlike me and my sister-in-law, they actually know what a cathode is. I just know it because of the old tvs, but she's actually trying to figure out what I could have meant based on the actual definition of the word.
In accordance with the rules I remain stoic as she gets it completely wrong.
Know your audience, I guess.
