My favorite Codenames moment:

I have to get my wife to guess "Ray" and "Tube", so I give the perfect clue: "Cathode for two." You know, like a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) television, a phrase that I think a lot of people are familiar with and definitely the first thing I think of when I hear the word "Cathode".

Her sister, who is giving clues for the other team, nods and agrees with me that this is a perfect clue.

My wife is baffled. She starts talking to her sister's husband, the guesser for the other team. They talk about anodes, and things opening and closing, and then I realize my mistake: unlike me and my sister-in-law, they actually know what a cathode is. I just know it because of the old tvs, but she's actually trying to figure out what I could have meant based on the actual definition of the word.

In accordance with the rules I remain stoic as she gets it completely wrong.

Know your audience, I guess.

We've always played with single word clues. Are we doing it wrong?

Its a single word and how many answers the clue applies to

Ok good, that's how we've been playing it.

"simpler rules" sounds like just a redesigned rule book. i hope they haven't changed any of the rules

Curious as well

Simpler rules? It's not like the original rulebook was a thesis.

Probably just clearer written. There was also a larger section of optional rules than actual rules, so I wonder if they've trimmed that. You have to realize they had no idea this game was going to blow up and be as big as it was when they first published it. Probably just cleaned the rules up to make it easier on the average joe that's not a hard core board gamer.
