Sunrise on the Reaping was released in March, I just finished reading it and would like to read some other opinions on it. In general to me it felt very much like the first book all over again and didn't give any new insights into Panem, but got lost in references to all the other books.

It suffers the same problems as many of the sequel/prequel ilk; as compared to the originals, it fails to stand on its own. Sure, it explains the origin and rationale for a few key characters in the original trilogy, but that's the only function of this book. Any attempt to establish stakes is undercut before the start as we are locked up by the future we (who have already read the original three books) already know.

So, flat, perfunctory, and fan-servicing; punctuated by privations of humanity inflicted on District 12; this story was unsatisfactory.

I wonder at those who, to start their readings of these books, elect to go chronologically rather than in publication order. They are good books, but the two prequels rely on foreknowledge offered in the Katniss arc.

There was almost nothing new but I thought it was pretty good over all. I did really like the Lou Lou story and that felt more emotional than all the other plot lines.

Yeah, that was an interesting bit, how they replaced her. Same with the reaping escalating and one of the tributes getting killed. But the general plot follows the first book very closely, I suppose that's to be expected as the games are more or less always the same, just with a different arena.

Yeah I think the fact it's another prequel book shows how hard it is to do more with the story. The fundamentals don't change.

Well, the ending of the third book changed a lof in the world. A sequel could be interesting, but unless everything goes to shit the world would go to something we could consider normal, a world without the hunger games. This mostly leaves prequels, so far they were all tied in some way to the hunger games, but there are more prequel options like something during the first revolution.

I quite enjoyed the book. I agree there wasn't much new, but it did feel like a nice stepping stone between Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and the original trilogy.
