It's probably better for the climate and the environment to grill veggies on a gas or coal-fired grill than to grill meat on an electric grill.

I think if all the people grilling would stop grilling entirely, it would still be less of an impact than getting rid of a single cruise ship.

Same as our cars. Sure we are the problem but container ships polite more by far. And nobody is pushing the fact keeping your current care is still the best for the environment even if it's an ICE vehicle.

Also all those people who are like I'm on my fourth fifth or sixth electric vehicle are not doing anything for the environment.

Yes, and, if you're grilling meat, do you do less harm grilling it on an electric grill or a fossil fuel grill?

Every change for the better - even a tiny marginal change like replacing a fossil fuel grill with an electric grill - is worth doing. Every time someone makes a decision based on the environment, they become more likely to make future decisions based on the environment. Especially if they get positive reinforcement for their decision instead of discouraging "this doesn't matter" or "you should do something else instead" responses.

(Yes, it would be better for the environment, and for people's health, and be the morally correct thing to do, to grill veggies instead of meat. But cultural dietary changes are a lot harder to make stick than swapping out a piece of equipment. And any change is better than none.)

That's called a stove... if I wanted to fry my hamburger, steak, etc. on the stove then I would do that. No need to buy an outdoor stove.

Eh not quite. You can BBQ outside and get the grill marks on the meat and such, still mostly BBQ. The difference though would be not getting that charcoal or wood burning smoke flavor, which can be a deal breaker for many. I wouldn't see much difference from electric and propane though.

Actually not fully true about not being able to get a smokey flavor with some electric grills. From the original article:

some electric grills do offer a way to introduce wood smoke — usually with a tin of wood chips that burn as the food cooks

From my experience those don't get anywhere near the same end result. It is better than nothing, but a tin of mesquite smoking chips is vastly different than say mesquite charcoal.

There's mini smoke chambers you can put mesquite charcoal in (you just need a little piece). You can also use wood chips if you want a different flavor

I have (and use) cast iron on my stove that will give me 'grill marks'. That does not mean that it's grilled... And, as you point out, the chemical reactions of cooking over wood/charcoal is all part of it that you're not going to duplicate on an electric 'grill'.

"Option" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this headline.

A microwave oven is also an "option" for cooking chicken. Pineapple is also an "option" for topping a pizza.

There are lots of bad "options" for preparing food.

Pineapple on pizza is delicious, get outta here

Not sure if more people like pineapple on pizza than don't, or if Lemmings are just too polite to downvote that much when they disagree. Works for me either way.

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
