“By pumping water out of the ground and moving it elsewhere, humans have shifted such a large mass of water that the Earth tilted nearly 80 centimeters (31.5 inches) east between 1993 and 2010 alone, according to a new study published in Geophysical Research Letters, AGU’s journal for short-format, high-impact research with implications spanning the Earth and space sciences.”
That’s pretty crazy
That is an absolutely astounding amount of movement in such a short time. I mean, I'm no geologist, so maybe they wouldn't be impressed, but my understanding is tectonic plates move mm per year. This would be movement of 4cm per year? Sounds scary.
The article did mention the rotational pole moves my meters on its own every year, so it's not as scary to me by itself. What scares me is how this clearly illustrates that humans are having a far bigger global impact on the planet than many are in denial about.
