If I’m getting what you’re trying to ask, is probably a better question for [email protected].

Basically I wish to start a lemmy instance of mine own, just like lemmy.world or programming.dev is.

If you don’t want the hassle of self-hosting, managed hosting is another option.

Here’s one example host to compare to: https://www.knthost.com/lemmy $11.25/mo.

No idea if they’re any good.

200gb is not a lot, is it?

I am curious how it works/counts - is it only own contents, created on the new instance or also data received from other instances?

For a single user it could be enough. It depends mostly on how many images they want to post.

Do you mean 200gb is per user? Not for the entire instance?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

If it’s a single-user instance, that’s the same number.

Do you mean that this linked hosting is for a single user instance? I didn't realise that.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

It seemed like the OP wanted their own instance for themselves. Now that I look back, I realize they may have wanted other users, too.

I understand now. You meant that 200gb is for the entire instance, irrespectively of number of users but you think he just wanted an instance for himself.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Yes, but I admit I could have misunderstood about it being a single user instance.

That's ok, I was asking in case I wanted to create one, and that wouldn't be a single user. I am not sure what he wanted but he was banned by few instances for anti vax theories (I think) so he may be after a single user one.

Start as in developing or as in hosting?

You're asking in a community called devs, implying you want to develop, but it seems like you want to only host?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Why dont people understand? They want it from the scratch!!

[-] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago

Not simply host, develop an instance right from the scratch !!

Honestly, if you have to ask so broadly you shouldn't. Chances are good you make a fatal mistake and your server starts harassing other servers or giving out CSAM.

Then again, given your username, follow the docker tutorial in the Lemmy documentation.

Pictures don't propagate across (most) instances now, its just links to images on the host instance.

I mean in general. Having a server connected to the internet is always a risk. Doesn't have to be Lemmy that's exploited.

And if they have an open registration it's still their servee that can be used to distribute images unchecked.
